Refugee Resettlement assists in helping create a home-away-from-home, we assist government-approved refugees in becoming self-sufficient through cultural orientation, job development, family reunification and resettlement. The Refugee Education Liaison is responsible for building and maintain partnerships with local school districts and community organizations as well as providing in-school and/or after school academic help to refugee students who have been identified by the school as having need. The Refugee Education Liaison will supplement the instruction students receive in class, help student’s complete homework, and guide students toward study practices that will encourage long-term success. The Refugee Education Liaison will also assist the Education Coordinator in delivering school orientations for newly arrived families, encouraging family engagement, performing outreach to local stakeholders, and other key components of the School Impact Grant. The successful candidate will have a passion for working with refugee students, engaging community partners, and show academic competence in core subject areas. This position requires extensive travel between multiple school districts, community centers, and homes within the service area. PRINCIPAL DUTIES Build relationships and establishing partnerships with local schools which serve high populations of refugee students. Establish sites for the expansion of in-school tutoring and after-school programs. Attend ongoing collaborative meetings with school personnel and educate staff and faculty on Catholic Charities services and other resources available to refugee students and families. Perform professional development trainings to educate teachers and school personnel on the topic of working with refugee students. Create new relationships and nurture already established partnerships with community organizations which serve refugee populations. Schedule regular outreach meetings to member agencies of the Houston Refugee Consortium to ensure RSI services are extended to all eligible refugees. Attend Quarterly Consultation meetings and other meetings in the community to share information about the RSI program to stakeholders. Create a welcoming, friendly learning environment for refugee students, create a curriculum that focuses on academic, cultural, and social-emotional engagement, prepare lessons and materials according to the curriculum, implement lesson plans at the after school/summer program. Collaborate with teachers to identify the areas where ESL intervention and other academic support are most needed for refugee students. Track student progress through pre-and post- testing, promotion rates, and report cards received from the school. Work with refugee families to educate them about the American school system and encourage parent engagement in school by coordinating activities such as parent-teacher meetings and parent orientations. Register students in after school program, create/update registration, and permission forms for the after-school program, set up and attend meetings with school administrators, monitor student progress, monitor attendance, write a weekly report detailing activities completed, maintain case files. Travel frequently across the region to serve students at different locations. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Associate degree in Child Development/Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Sociology or related field. One (1) year experience working with refugee population in an educational setting. Valid Texas Driver’s License SKILLS REQUIREMENTS Ability to give presentations to an audience. Demonstrated academic proficiency in core subject areas such as Math, English, Science, or Social Studies. Sensitive to the needs of refugee populations. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport across diverse cultural backgrounds. Ability to work independently, manage multiple responsibilities, and adapt to changing needs.
