ABOUT THE ROLE – KŌRERO MŌ TE TŪRANGA

The Refugee Trauma Recovery Service offers specialised mental health support to help former refugees and their families recover from trauma and adjust to life in a Aotearoa, New Zealand.
We’re seeking a Cross-Cultural Worker, ideally someone with a refugee background, to join our team. This role involves providing language support, supporting assessments, care planning, risk and case management, and offering cultural insights to staff. You may also assist with group programmes and support external training sessions.

IN THIS ROLE, WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO IS ABLE TO:

  • Provide language support during therapy sessions, support culturally appropriate care planning, and ensure client involvement in decisions affecting their wellbeing.
  • Offer cultural advice to the team and help clients build culturally supportive networks within their communities.
  • Advocate for clients’ access to services and encourage refugee communities to engage with mental health support and self-care initiatives.
  • Build connections with refugee communities and relevant organisations to strengthen client support networks.
  • Deliver cultural awareness education and co-facilitate therapeutic groups in partnership with external agencies.
  • Contribute to service planning, policy development, and support other refugee programmes within the organisation.

WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO APPLY FOR THIS ROLE IF YOU HAVE (AT LEAST SOME OF) THESE COMPETENCIES:

  • A relevant qualification in mental health or a related field, with at least 2 years’ experience working cross-culturally.
  • Bilingual skills (especially Arabic or Spanish) is an advantage
  • Strong understanding of the refugee experience; candidates from a refugee background are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Knowledge of trauma, mental health issues (e.g., PTSD, depression), and ability to support affected individuals and families.
  • Proven ability to facilitate psycho-educational group sessions and act as a cultural link between clients and services.
  • Strong communication, advocacy, and networking skills, including experience working with government and community agencies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office are desirable
