Salary: $28.30 - $38.91 per hour, depending on qualifications Schedule: Monday through Friday The Registered Dietitian provides effective individual and group self-management education and medical nutrition therapy, as well as individualized and group teaching plans. The RD serves as an informational resource and subject matter expert for patients, physicians, healthcare team members, families, and staff, on nutrition and nutrition education. In this role the RD functions as an integral member of the healthcare interdisciplinary team, working at the highest level, utilizing a team-based approach, and ensuring that patients have the full attention of a dedicated team of health care providers who work together to manage their care, while supporting diversity and cultural factors. The incumbent in this position works with administrative supervision and has discretion and independent judgment authority with respect to matters of significance and in respect to patient care, resolving in coordination with the assigned supervisor any work problems involving departures from standard policies. Essential Job Functions: Evaluates, develops, monitors, and documents the nutritional status and nutritional needs of patients and participants using established standards of care and practice guidelines. Provides medical nutrition therapy services to patients and families, including the assessment of nutritional status, nutrition care planning, counseling, and evaluation; Evaluates and assesses (via lab values, interpretation, consumption, weight management, and food or drug interactions) a patient’s nutrition needs and status of all age groups through dietary histories and consultation, developing and implementing individualized plans of nutrition care and monitoring patient progress; Develops an individualized interdisciplinary nutrition care plan with short and long-term goals; Prescribes therapeutic diets for high-risk patients and performs reassessments as necessary; Confers with patients, providers, nursing staff, and family members concerning these diets; Monitors adherence and response to nutrition therapy, adjusts therapy as needed to achieve and sustain effective nutritional status; Provides recommendations to the health care team based on available data; Provides nutrition counseling: Creates an educational setting conducive to learning with adequate resources to facilitate the learning process; Counsels patients and family members on nutritional principals, dietary plans, food selection, and economics; Provides patient-specific education to patient/family/caregiver regarding nutritional therapy and status; Uses age-appropriate learning methods, appropriate behavioral/motivational strategies and reinforcement techniques; Demonstrates understanding of stages of behavior change and ability to counsel individuals on these stages through development of behavior change goals; Assesses patient readiness to learn and patient perceived needs; Facilitates educational/behavioral experiences that assist the patient in achieving identified goals; Utilizes motivational interviewing to coach patients; Develops collaborative and positive results-orientated relationships by communicating effectively using verbal, written, and interpersonal skills when interacting with patients to improve patient outcomes and adherence to nutrition therapy plans; Maintains and updates educational materials to assure accurate, current, and scientifically sound content; Participates in the selection and development of educational resource materials; Reviews with patients weight variance, skin issues, and nutrition consults and provides recommendations to healthcare providers; Effectively applies evidence-based research to enhance patient care: Seeks out and reviews research findings in their application to practice; Bases practice on sound scientific principles, generally accepted standards, research, and theory; Assures clinical care in the area of diabetes specialization. Maintains a Continuous Quality Improvement approach to all patient care and program operations. Maintains at all times patient confidentiality by controlling the environment and information disclosed to individuals and complies with all HIPAA and corporate compliance standards. Performs all assigned patient care and administrative duties or responsibilities supporting service unit and department operations within established time frames; meeting established rates of performance for the quality and quantity of work for the position; demonstrating a level of quality, efficiency, and accuracy in the employee’s job performance that ensures the highest standards of excellence. Teaches diabetes self-management care classes to patients and their families according to scope of practice standards of professional performance for diabetes educators; Demonstrates an understanding of and proficiency with the application of all Joint Commission Accreditation standards and reporting requirements applicable to department operations and a Registered Dietitian. Performs all essential functions, duties, tasks, assignments, and responsibilities for the particular program(s) assigned within the El Rio organization at a location assigned by management. Other Duties and Responsibilities: In support of the Mission and Vision of El Rio Health, will at all times represent themselves as a professional role model of El Rio Health serving as a positive informational source for members of the community. Supports El Rio by participating in community events which promote good health and which contribute to a broader awareness and understanding of El Rio Health and the many services provided to the community. Participates in all appropriate health care activities related to El Rio Health on a local, state, and national level to maintain and enhance El Rio’s image with health agencies, professional associations, and the general public. Increases community awareness of health issues by developing curriculum and presentations on health education services, activities, and programs. Facilitates presentations, and other informative activities on nutrition-related topics to the healthcare community, patients, or community members. Participates in continuing education programs, meetings, training programs, or other related activities to nutrition education. Maintains and develops new skill proficiencies with El Rio Health operating systems and programs by adapting to changing requirements. Ensures and supports the cost-effective use of materials, supplies, and equipment by limiting waste of all organizational supplies and resources. Employees must maintain their skills proficiency with El Rio operating systems and/or software programs by adapting to changing requirements and successfully learning and demonstrating new skills in response to software, system, and program improvements or upgrades. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition or related field from an accredited college or university and course work accredited or approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. One (1) year progressive dietary experience working in the nutrition education field, preferably in a healthcare environment. Completed an ACEND accredited supervised practicum at a health care facility, community agency or foodservice corporation. Registered Dietician Eligible (RDE)-has met the didactic and supervised practice requirements established by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Passing score in the national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. If applicable, equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered, and must be directly related to the functions and responsibilities of the job. Required Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations: Registered Dietician (RD) or Registered Dietician Nutritionist (RDN) license or must obtain a Registered Dietician (RD) or Registered Dietician Nutritionist (RDN) license within the first six months of employment. Must obtain and maintain current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers. Employees in this position are required to have reliable transportation that can meet any operational reassignments of the organization during the workday. If an employee is driving during work hours, the employee is required to possess a valid driver’s license and must comply with Arizona vehicle insurance requirements. Preferred Education, Experience, Skills, Abilities: Three (3) years’ progressive dietary experience working in the nutrition education field, preferably in a healthcare environment. Certification as a Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) or Board Certification in Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM) from an approved accrediting agency or organization. Bilingual (English/Spanish) with the ability to speak, read and write in both languages.
