REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Completion of an accredited Human Nutrition program (or equivalent) from a recognized university, including completion of a Dietetic Internship Program or Nutritionist equivalent.
  • Registration: Current registration (or eligibility to register) with the Nova Scotia College of Dietitians and Nutritionists is required
  • Experience: A minimum of one year experience working as a dietitian or nutritionist is preferred.
  • Specialized Competencies: Expertise in dysphagia management and understanding the unique dietary needs of aging residents. Skilled in management malnutrition, chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular conditions. Additionally, an strong understanding of the nutritional aspects of wound care.
  • Counseling: Demonstrated experience in providing nutrition counseling to residents.

Responsibilities:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement personalized nutritional care plans, tailored to each residents’ needs and preferences, ensuring they align with other healthcare plans. Coordinate, execute, and evaluate the effectiveness of these nutritional care plans.
  • Provide guidance to dietary and health & holistic services staff on the delivery of special diets as prescribed by physicians.
  • Assess nutritional quality of daily menus and deliver in-service education on food service and nutrition.
  • Provide education during the Resident Cooking Program, and counsel selected residents on their individual nutritional needs. Lead individual and group educational sessions with residents and their families regarding dietary requirements.
  • Submit nutrition and food-related educational content to our website and social media pages.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate actively as a member of the multidisciplinary team and pharmacy committee and maintain close communication with all staff, management, and nurses.
  • Ensure established nutritional standards are upheld and regularly monitored.
  • Provide nutritional updates for Board reports throughout the year.
  • Provide training to new hires on dietary restrictions and proper methods of supportive feeding.

  • Balance therapeutic treatments with palliative care, prioritizing quality of life over quantity
  • Consider each residents’ individual history when making dietary recommendations
  • Recognize the residents’ right to live at risk, respecting their decisions regarding dietary choices.
