GENERAL SUMMARY:

Novant Health ASC at Mount Pleasant Outpatient Surgical Center is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) team. The RN in the PACU/Post-Op department will provide high-quality care to patients recovering from spine-related surgical procedures, ensuring their comfort, safety, and well-being during the post-operative phase. This role involves monitoring patients, administering medications, assessing recovery progress, and ensuring a smooth transition from the operating room to post-operative recovery. The RN will collaborate with surgical teams and other healthcare professionals to provide exceptional care and ensure optimal patient outcomes.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Required: High school diploma or GED.
  • Required: Graduation from an accredited nursing program (ADN, BSN).
  • Required: Active and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of South Carolina.
  • Required: Current CPR/BLS certification.
  • Preferred: Previous experience in PACU, post-operative, or surgical nursing preferred.
  • Preferred: Certification in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred.

  • Strong clinical and critical thinking skills to assess patient conditions and provide appropriate interventions.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to educate and interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations calmly and effectively, particularly in post-operative emergencies.
  • Knowledge of post-operative care protocols, pain management strategies, and recovery monitoring.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to accurately document patient information and procedures.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple patients and priorities efficiently.
  • Compassionate and patient-focused, with a commitment to providing high-quality care during the recovery phase.
  • Proficient in Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems and medical equipment used in the PACU setting.
Responsibilities
  • Patient Monitoring: Provide continuous monitoring and assessment of patients recovering from surgery in the PACU, including vital signs, oxygen saturation, pain levels, and overall status.
  • Pain Management: Administer prescribed medications and interventions to manage post-operative pain, adjusting care based on patient needs and response.
  • Post-Op Care: Perform post-operative assessments, including wound inspection, management of drains or catheters, and ensuring proper positioning and comfort for patients.
  • Patient Education: Educate patients and their families about post-surgery recovery, including instructions on pain management, activity restrictions, wound care, and follow-up care.
  • Collaboration with Surgical Team: Communicate effectively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare providers to provide coordinated care and report any changes in patient conditions.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate, up-to-date patient records, documenting post-operative assessments, interventions, medications, and patient responses in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
  • Discharge Planning: Assist with preparing patients for discharge from the PACU, ensuring they are stable and provide instructions for post-operative care, follow-up appointments, and any necessary prescriptions.
  • Emergency Response: Respond promptly and effectively to any post-operative complications or emergencies, including cardiac, respiratory, or neurological changes.
  • Patient Comfort & Safety: Advocate for patient comfort and safety during recovery, providing appropriate interventions to manage nausea, anxiety, and other post-operative symptoms.
  • Quality Improvement & Compliance: Follow all protocols and procedures related to patient care, ensuring compliance with safety and infection control standards, and participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes.
