Job Description
With a particular focus on enhancing the patient experience, the Registered Nurse will provide advocacy and education to patients and families experiencing a cancer diagnosis, through facilitating access to services, coordinating care, providing support, as well as symptom management throughout treatment and follow up.

The Registered Nurse possesses excellent decision-making and clinical judgement skills to appropriately manage, assess and triage all the referrals and assign appropriate resources. As part of this function, the Registered Nurse is required to collect and report volumes, diagnostic wait times, and symptom management data.

  • The Registered Nurse will provide psychosocial, physical, and spiritual support, which may be complex and dynamic, utilizing the nursing process. The Registered Nurse will act as an expert resource to healthcare providers within the community to facilitate access to care, services and resources, and potential entry into the cancer care system.
  • Provides nursing assessment and coordination of care utilizing appropriate protocols, tools and documentation processes.
  • Provides ongoing assessment of symptoms and alters appointments/consults in collaboration with the clerical team as necessary.
  • Provides education and support regarding required diagnostic tests.
  • Integrates substantial knowledge, skill, decision making and communication techniques in assessing health needs and in planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care for the patient with a potential cancer diagnosis.
  • Assesses the need for additional patient/family support and facilitates access to Institution/community supportive care services, as required.
  • Individualizes the inter-professional patient care path to reflect interventions to meet identified needs while promoting safety, privacy and confidentiality, in consultation with the patient/family/significant others and the health care team.
  • Participates in the development and delivery of educational material to meet the learning needs of patients, family members, peers and other health professionals.
  • Completes health teaching for clients/families regarding each component of the diagnostic pathway.
  • Engages in continuous learning opportunities to maintain clinical competence and to advance own knowledge.
  • Engages in creative, collaborative problem solving and planning strategies to provide information on and assist in the resolution of identified pathway delays and service gaps.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to the philosophy and goals of the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Baccalaureate in Nursing
  • Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Oncology Certification –CON(C)
  • Oncology Specialty Certificate an asset
  • Must agree to participate in an online Foundations in Cancer (De Sousa Institute) immediately after hire
  • Demonstrated counselling skills
  • Minimum of 3 years Oncology nursing experience
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and strong organizational skills.
  • Embraces principles of evidence based practice
  • Experience in patient education and program development
  • Knowledge of current Mississauga Halton Central West Regional Cancer Program
  • Current certifications of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current membership in other professional organizations (i.e. RNAO) and the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO) an asset.
    Additional Information
    Hours: Monday to Friday, Days; 8 hour shifts, (Hours are subject to change based on operational needs).
    Salary: $39.07 to $56.00 per hour
