POSITION DESCRIPTION

Temporary assignment for approximately 78 weeks

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Clinical Scholar program is a new initiative from the Ministry of Health to support newly graduated nurses in their transition into the workforce. The Clinical Scholar is an experienced nurse with frontline experience who demonstrates exceptional clinical experience, with outstanding communication skills and experience teaching clinical learners. The Nurse Clinical Scholar provides mentorship support and leadership to nursing practice and education initiatives across the organization. The Nurse Clinical Scholar provides both clinical and education expertise within a client-centered, evidence informed focus, to support and advance nursing excellence and quality of care within and across clinical areas. In addition, the Nurse-Clinical Scholar in collaboration with the leadership team will promote continuous learning, professional development, continuous quality improvement and service excellence through role modeling, coaching and mentoring, in a direct hands-on approach, and effectively engage staff to create and support an interprofessional environment that promotes learning, inquiry, innovation, accountability, collaboration, team-building and professionalism.
As a Clinical Scholar for Critical Care you would be responsible for providing mentorship to the program beneficiaries and to support their nursing practice and integration into the clinical area in accordance with organizational and professional standards, and in collaboration with clinical teams. This role is eligible for additional hourly premiums.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing preferred
  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • Certification in adult learning, and leadership preferred
  • Membership with the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario preferred
  • 5 years evidence of current clinical practice in Critical Care and education expertise and ongoing professional and leadership development
  • Mentorship experience required
  • 2 years experience in a clinical teaching role preferred
  • 2 years experience within an academic teaching hospital preferred
  • Current BCLS/HCP certification required; Instructor preferred
  • Canadian Nurses Association specialty certification preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to the organization’s values of Service, Responsible Stewardship, Community Responsiveness and Respect
  • Demonstrated expertise in quality improvement, project and change management
  • Works autonomously within a complex and dynamic environment and effectively manages competing priorities and multiple initiatives.

  • Ability to work effectively autonomously and to develop and sustain collaborative relationships internally and externally with the community and with academic partners
  • Ability to use information technology and demonstrate working knowledge and proficiency in appropriate computer software including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Learning Management Systems, Electronic Documentation, Digital Order Sets, all Nursing Related or Clinical Software Applications supported by SJHH”

Responsibilities
  • Supports programming in a supernumerary role, under the Nursing Professional Practice portfolios, including but limited to focusing on just-in-time, at the elbow, bedside support of newly hired nursing staff in collaboration with unit nurse educators.
  • Participates in the implementation of ministry-based nursing initiatives such as NGG, SPEP, IEN, Enhanced Clinical Extern Program, and Clinical Scholars Program
  • Work closely with the Director, Education, Quality & Patient Experience, the Clinical Scholar will ensure that reporting metrics are clearly communicated and in a timely manner.
  • Provides support and leadership to advance nursing practice and education initiatives that will optimize patient outcomes and experiences and improve quality of care.
  • Ensures educational activities are congruent with SJHH’s mission, goals, values, priorities, initiatives and resources.
  • Ensures educational activities are evidence-informed, client-centered, and reflective of established clinical and education best practices.
  • Works autonomously within a complex and dynamic environment and effectively manages competing priorities and multiple initiatives.
  • Acts as formal and informal educational consultant to departments and programs on clinical practice/education issues and their resolution.
  • Prioritizes appropriately in consultation with relevant stakeholders within and external to the SJHH organization.
  • Collaborates with Clinical Managers, Nurse Educators and point-of-care staff to identify knowledge gaps and support ongoing and just-in-time education for staff within clinical area(s).
  • Supports learners and colleagues to identify their own needs as well as the effective learning activities required to meet those needs.
