Responsibilities: Patient-Centered Care: Applies Relationship-Based Care to develop holistic plans with patients as partners. Uses strong assessment, communication, and critical thinking skills. Documentation & Safety: Maintains thorough documentation and identifies clinical, social, and safety needs to improve outcomes and patient experience. Teamwork & Governance: Leads and participates in unit teams, shared governance, and hospital-wide councils to drive positive change. Mentorship & Learning: Precepts students and new hires. Promotes continuous learning through feedback, presentations, and sharing research. Quality & Innovation: Identifies improvement opportunities and leads initiatives that enhance care and workforce well-being. Healthy Workplace: Builds strong relationships, models cultural awareness, and supports a balanced work-life approach. Scrub Role: Performs scrub duties (required for RNs hired after July 1, 2023). Other Duties: Performs additional responsibilities in alignment with system-wide competencies. Education & Experience: Minimum 3 years of nursing experience required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. Master’s in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) may substitute for certification requirements. If BSN is held, a Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for certification. Professional Development: Annual completion of an evidence-based professional contribution aligned with department, hospital, or system goals, approved by the Unit Director. Must obtain and maintain one of the following within 1 year of hire/transfer: UPMC-approved nursing certification. Certification from the UPMC Wolff Learning Academy Center for Nursing Excellence. Performance Standards: Must achieve and maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher rating on annual Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluations. VP approval required for promotion to this level. Clinical Competency: Demonstrates age-specific care knowledge and skills per unit standards. Applies principles of growth and development across the lifespan. Exemplary clinical judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. Ability to lead others in applying the nursing process. Interpersonal & Physical Requirements: Builds positive, caring relationships with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams. Functions effectively in complex, fast-paced environments. Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and patient positioning. Mobility and visual/manual dexterity required. Licensure, Certifications & Clearances Current RN licensure in the state of practice or a multistate license under the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC). CPR certification (Basic Life Support or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) per AHA standards within 30 days of hire. Act 33/34/37/31 clearances required. Completion of annual evidence-based project approved by business unit panel/CNO per UPMC’s My Nursing Career Ladder. Certification not required if Master’s in Nursing or DNP is held.
