D6 UNIT PROFILE

D6 a 36-bed unit is an integral part of the Odette Cancer Program at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. The main focus of the unit is caring for surgical oncology patients. Patients include Colorectal, Hepatopancreatobiliary, ENT/Head & Neck, Urology, and General Surgery.
Staff nurses are supported in their professional growth and development to acquire the skills and knowledge to care the patients. The unit environment fosters ongoing growth and leadership development whereby nurses are mentored in their pursuit of professional advancement. For example, staff are supported in their role as team leaders, council chairs, preceptors, and committee members. Quality improvement (QI) is one of the strengths of the unit. Nurses work collaboratively with the interprofessional team on projects to enhance patient care. They are coached to present QI projects locally, nationally, and internationally.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

  • Current Ontario Registration
  • Current B.C.L.S. Certificate
  • B.ScN. preferred
  • Nursing Oncology certification preferred
  • Proven experience in a primary nursing setting required
  • ENT, Urology, Oncology experience is preferred
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a person-focused care environment within an interprofessional team, including students
  • Demonstrated interest in personal professional development
  • Commitment to acquiring nursing Oncology certification
  • Demonstrated commitment to Person-Centred Care approaches and principles
Responsibilities

RNs on the Unit work in an environment that fosters ongoing learning for staff and students with a commitment to preceptorship. The RN is responsible for the total care of a group of patients within a primary nursing care delivery model. The RN supports the philosophy of person- centred care and principles and the mission and values of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. The RN works closely with the members of the interprofessional team to provide care including discharge planning.
