The Registered Nurse-ECMO serves as an expert in evaluating patients, administering care, recognizing complications and coordinating with other members of the critical care team. This position uses effective interpersonal communication in collaborating with fellow members of the critical care team. He/she uses advanced skills to care for patients who are critically ill and at high risk for life-threatening health problems. This role is responsible for responding to life-saving situations, using nursing standards and protocols for treatment, acting as patient advocate, and providing education and support to patient families. This position works with increasing independence to set criteria for the quality of patient care, assess patients' needs and cares for patients using specialized knowledge and skills and evaluates the outcomes and interventions. This individual also directs and guides patient care activities of ancillary personnel and other patient care personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing practice. This nurse serves an expert in the care of patients on ECMO. This nurse has been trained on the management of the ECMO pump and is responsible for the evaluation of the patient, administering care, recognizing complications and coordination of care with the member of the critical care and ECMO teams.
