Location: Eisenberg 72 (EI72), Hematology/Oncology/Cellular Therapy (General Care) Patient Care Type: This unit specializes in patients with cancer-specifically patients with hematologic disorders and cancers. The unit provides acute inpatient and hospital-based outpatient nursing care to patients with leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and various hematopoietic disorders. Patients may be hospitalized during various stages of their wellness/illness from initial diagnosis through active treatment, recovery, and through end of life. Nursing care is provided primarily to adults 18 years and over. Patients are also followed as a hospital-based outpatient as part of this patient care unit, after hospital discharge and as required by our Cellular Therapy program including chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy program (CAR-T). Nurses from this unit are also able to train to this advanced role near their 2-year mark. The nursing practice in this setting is fast-paced and nurses can practice advanced nursing skills outside of standard inpatient nursing skills, which include cellular therapy administration, research infusions, immunotherapy, blood transfusions, central line care, patient triage, etc. Bed #: 25 private rooms including 4 rooms that support patients requiring radioactive isolation. All rooms are equipped with a ceiling lift for staff and patient safety. Caregility technology is available in all rooms as well. The hospital-based outpatient unit has 27 rooms to continue to support patients while out of the hospital. Nursing Team Roles: Patient care services include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR T) therapy, pain management, blood transfusions, antibiotic therapy, central line care, care for patients preparing for or recovering from a blood and marrow transplant. As part of the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, the unit participates in individual and group cancer research programs. Emotional support, patient/family education, and discharge planning and coordination are integral components of nursing care provided. Care is provided in a holistic, patient-centered approach. Staff will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of nursing care. For new grad nurses: All newly graduated Registered Nurses with less than 12 months of practice experience, hired into a scheduled FTE Registered Nurse position on the Rochester campus of Mayo Clinic are automatically enrolled in the Nurse Residency Program. A separate application or enrollment process is not required. All nurses new to Mayo Clinic, regardless of experience, will receive an extensive orientation program. The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as a part of the responsibility of their role. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship. Successful sponsorship will require state licensure and completion of the VisaScreen or equivalent certification.
