SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager (or designee), this position is responsible for providing care across the Brown University Health. Duties include inserting peripheral intravenous (I.V.) catheters, Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter Lines (PICC), midlines and monitoring peripherally inserted central lines, mid-lines, and other infusion devices. Acts as a resource and consultant for staff regarding I.V. therapy assessment, products, and procedures. The core Success Factors include: Instill Trust and Value Differences Patient and Community Focus and Collaborate RESPONSIBILITIES: Places peripheral I.V. insertions, particularly for patients with difficult access, using ultrasound guided technology when necessary. Evaluates patient’s plan of care, history, and pertinent lab values to determine appropriate venous access. Inserts PICC’s and Midlines to standard. Assists staff by monitoring PICC and Midlines, de-clotting, and performing dressing charges and discontinuing central line catheters. Plans, evaluates, and implements interventions for solving I.V. related patient care problems Assesses and provides appropriate teaching based on patient and family needs Participates in research and quality improvement studies related to I.V. therapy. Keeps current on advances in I.V. therapy. Participates in evaluation of new products. Evaluates effectiveness of patient care and identifies opportunities for improvement. Collaborates with the healthcare team, patient, family, and community services. Participates in unit-based quality improvement and research activities. Utilizes all available resources to provide quality, cost effective patient care. Identifies growth needs and participated in educational opportunities and professional organizations. Serves as a role model/preceptor for new graduate nurses and less experienced personnel. Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Baccalaureate in Nursing preferred. Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. EXPERIENCE: Two years of clinical experience to include: I.V. therapy; Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (BLS). Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills. Ultrasound guided IV placement, PICC line placement, Midline placement certification within 8 months of hire depending on shift/hours worked. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Visual and aural ability to monitor patient status. Physical ability to assist in lifting and positioning patients. Exposed to patient care environment. Physical ability for walking greater than 3 miles per shift, and extensive standing; lifting, positioning, and pushing patients on stretchers.
