Description Summary A long-term care infection preventionist (IP) develops, implements, and oversees infection control programs to protect residents and staff. Key duties include surveillance of infections, implementing policies, educating staff on practices like hand hygiene and isolation precautions, and ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations. Report findings and comply with reporting requirements for facility, state, and federal agencies. Policy development and implementation: Develop, review, and revise the facility's infection prevention and control program and related policies and procedures annually and as needed. Education and training: Provide education to staff, residents, and families on infection prevention principles, such as hand hygiene, proper use of equipment, and isolation precautions. Auditing and monitoring: Conduct regular rounds to assess compliance with infection control practices, including hand hygiene, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, and environmental safety. Outbreak management: Lead and coordinate the response to outbreaks of infectious diseases within the facility. Antibiotic stewardship: Oversee the facility's antibiotic stewardship program to promote the appropriate use of antibiotics. Collaboration and leadership: Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, departments, and leaders to implement evidence-based practices and improve processes that prevent infection. Lead the facility's Infection and Prevention Control Committee and participate in other quality assurance committees. Regulatory compliance: Stay current on federal, state, and local regulations and ensure the facility remains in compliance. Requirements Qualifications and Skills Must have a current state license to practice as a registered nurse (RN). Current CPR certification and additional certification in nursing specialty desired. Often requires professional nursing experience in a healthcare setting. Certification is often required or preferred, such as the Certified in Infection Control (CIC) certification. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, public health issues, and the ability to interpret lab and diagnostic tests.
