Job Description
Job Title: Registered Nurse Labor and Delivery Nurse
Job Summary:
As a Registered Nurse Labor and Delivery Nurse, you will be responsible for providing exceptional care to pregnant women and assisting with the delivery of newborns. Your primary role will include the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care to ensure a safe and comfortable birth experience for both mother and baby. You will collaborate closely with the medical team, including obstetricians and neonatologists, to guide and support women throughout the labor and delivery process.
Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Provide compassionate and personalized care to pregnant women during the prenatal, labor, and postpartum stages.
2. Monitor and evaluate the progress of labor, including fetal heart rate monitoring, cervical dilation assessment, and vital sign monitoring.
3. Assist with pain management techniques during labor, ensuring the comfort and well-being of the mother.
4. Collaborate with the medical team to develop and implement individualized birth plans and provide necessary interventions during labor.
5. Perform various obstetric procedures, such as amniotomy, fetal scalp electrode placement, and episiotomy repair.
6. Administer medications and intravenous fluids as prescribed and monitor their effects on both mother and baby.
7. Provide education and guidance to new parents on baby care, breastfeeding, and postpartum recovery.
8. Document all aspects of care accurately and efficiently, ensuring patient records are updated and maintained.
9. Respond promptly to emergency situations and provide immediate interventions as needed.
10. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as lactation consultants and social workers, to ensure comprehensive care for families.
11. Adhere to infection control protocols and maintain a clean and safe environment in the labor and delivery unit.
12. Participate in continuing education and professional development activities to enhance proficiency and stay up-to-date with medical advancements.
13. Show empathy and support to families experiencing emotional distress or complications during childbirth.
14. Advocate for patients and effectively communicate patient needs to the healthcare team.
15. Follow ethical practices and maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
2. Graduation from an accredited nursing program with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
3. Prior experience working in labor and delivery or obstetrics unit is preferred.
4. BLS and ACLS certification.
5. Excellent clinical skills with a strong ability to make critical decisions quickly.
6. Effective communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
7. Ability to work in a fast-paced and high-stress environment, handling multiple tasks simultaneously.
8. Knowledge of evidence-based practices and protocols related to labor and delivery nursing.
9. Proficiency in using electronic health records and other healthcare technology.
10. Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
11. Flexibility to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
12. Physical stamina to stand, walk, and lift patients for extended periods.
13. Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local regulations and standards.
