Job Details Job Location: Electra Memorial Hospital - Electra, TX 76360 Responsible for the total nursing care, assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of each patient. Plans, provides and documents discharge planning, teaching, and educating patients, family, or others to attain optimal health and continuity of care. Assures that the plan of care is carried out in a safe environment through performance and supervision of subordinate personnel. Responsible for all emergency room patients presenting during each assigned shift. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides nursing care services for the hospital and emergency department. Perform basic nursing skills competently and documents properly. Formulate nursing care plans based on the information gathered and patient health history. Receive staff report on patients during shift change and review completion of report and throughout assigned shift, noting changes or addition of patient assignments. Identify teaching, learning, and discharge needs at time of admission and throughout hospitalization and document appropriately. Assist physician and nursing staff in patient care. Administer medications according to policy as prescribed by physician. Perform physical examinations and diagnostic tests. Verify medication administration accuracy, perform the required checks on the medication administration record and document medications according to policy. Provide care appropriate for the patients served based on demonstrated knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. Assess and interpret data on the patients’ status to identify patients’ requirements relative to their age-specific needs and provides care needed as stipulated in departmental policy. Instruct patients and family members regarding treatments and follow-up care. Identify potential infectious process and document appropriately while notifying the Infection Control Nurse and attending physician in a timely manner. Designate nursing staff to assist in the emergency room during emergencies as needed. Assign tasks and projects to establish an efficient and clean patient care and work environment. Ensure that all patient care delegated to others is done safely, accurately, and in a timely manner. Transcribe and/or cosign physician’s orders completely and accurately according to Hospital District policy and practice. Transcribe emergency room records to emergency room log in a timely manner. Accurately document on each shift the nursing patient care activities and the patient’s response to nursing interventions and on observation and charts extraordinary events or changes in patient’s condition. Participate in the health care educational needs for the patient, family, or significant other regarding patient care needs, disease prevention and health maintenance measures. Work with other departments to order services or report changes in orders. Perform patient rounds with physician while obtaining supplies or equipment requested by physician. Inventory emergency room narcotics at beginning and end of each shift with the Charge Nurse and sign appropriate log. Responsible for the proper care and transportation of deceased patients and complete the death certificate according to policy. Notify the medical examiner for patients who expire under unusual circumstances, less than 24 hours after admission, or when foul play is suspected. OTHER SIGNIFICANT REQUIREMENTS: Maintain confidentiality on a daily basis. Work well with other employees. Perform other functions and tasks as assigned. Follow standard precautions when providing direct patient care or handling potentially infectious materials. Participate in department on-call schedule. WHY EHD? EXPERIENCE: One year experience as a licensed registered nurse preferred. PERSONAL JOB-RELATED SKILLS: Knowledge of nursing care. Effective written and oral communication skills. Familiar with operating computers and the ability to utilize computer systems. LICENSURE, REGISTRY, CERTIFICATIONS: Registered Nurse currently licensed by the state of Texas required. Current CPR certification required. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Duties of the position require moderate periods of walking and standing. Pushing, pulling, reaching, and bending when involved in patient care. Lifting up to 52 pounds and occasional heavy lifting in supporting or moving patients that may suddenly become weak or helpless. The ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions.
