Internal BSMH associates are not eligible for sign-on bonuses PRIMARY FUNCTION/GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION: Coordinates the clinical and administrative functions of the Hospital through proven management/leadership skills during designated tour of duty. Provides leadership and direction to nursing staff, medical staff, all departments throughout the Hospital, and to the community. Combines clinical skills, and organizational and administrative abilities to provide quality patient care through innovation. II. EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS: Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing; a baccalaureate degree is preferred. Must be licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse in the State of Virginia. Must have 3-5 years recent acute care clinical experience including work experience in a supervisory role. Must be CPR certified and be able to perform both adult and child CPR in any setting throughout the hospital at any time while on duty. ACLS certification preferred and encouraged. III. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: A. Performs hospital rounds to assess and evaluate the quality of patient care and to identify problems and needs in all areas of the facility; implements appropriate follow-up action. B. Initiates appropriate counseling and disciplinary action of employees in the absence of the Administrative Directors in accordance with Human Resources and Department of Nursing policies. This includes following the policy regarding substance abuse. C. Serves as a clinical resource and support to nursing staff by performing patient assessment, inserting IV catheters, NG tube insertion and other patient related treatments and assistance when necessary. Provides assistance to staff in the use of monitoring equipment, IV pumps and other such equipment used in patient treatment. D. Acts as a resource person if the team/care center is unable to solve a staffing dilemma. Provides input and assistance to staff to reallocate care delivery resources to meet patient care needs. E. Assigns patient placement for emergency admissions, direct admissions and transfers, considering patient comfort and need, care center staffing and workload. F. Coordinates patient transport from one area to another to expedite patient movement when needed. Coordinates EMTALA transfers and ensures adherence to policy. G. Responds immediately to all codes to assist, assess needs and take appropriate actions according to policy. Initiates snow and disaster plans and hospital exposure policy when necessary. H. Responsible for cancellation of operating room cases after being notified by the surgeon. Provides appropriate documentation to OR. I. Procures equipment, medical records, supplies, pharmacy drugs and patient nourishment in the absence of ancillary personnel. J. Resolves complaints as expediently as possible, communicating incident and resolution to appropriate management and/or notifying the Administrator on-call. K. Transports body to morgue and releases to funeral home according to policy. L. Utilizes a problem solving approach when dealing with conflict resolution between staff members, medical staff, and visitors. M. Serves as an administrative resource for staff, physicians, patients and families in accordance with Hospital policy and procedure. N. Provides support to families in conjunction with Pastoral Care and Patient Advocates. O. Notifies appropriate department manager of unusual hospital occurrences; e.g., patient’s concerns, personnel conflict, diversion, and any other emergency situations as per Administrative policy. P. Proactively collaborates with and supports the decisions/direction of the Administrative Directors and Managers of the patient care areas regarding issues related to clinical practice, personnel management, and staffing. Q. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age, specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in Hospital policies and procedures.
