Performs various patient tests and administers medications within the scope of practice of the registered nurse. The most frequent diagnoses for the medical patients are cardiovascular disorders and cardio-respiratory conditions. The surgical patients represent a variety of specialties including, but not limited to general surgery and cardiovascular surgery. Cardiovascular intervention/procedural patients (post cardiac stent, cardiac device placement, etc.) are often placed on this unit. Medical and/or surgical patients requiring a more intensive level of care, as well as cardiac monitoring may be PCU level of care. Examples of the PCU level of care include but are not limited to vasoactive drug administration, invasive monitoring, advanced sepsis, and DKA.
