Description

We are currently seeking a dedicated and experienced Registered Practical Nurse/Charge Nurse to join our team at Bay Haven Care Community Retirement Lodge. As the Registered Practical Nurse/Charge Nurse, you will be responsible for providing professional nursing care to our residents and coordinating all activities necessary for the management of the nursing care unit. You will report directly to the Retirement Home Manager and collaborate closely with the Administrator, Attending Physicians, Recreation department, Food Service Supervisor, and other staff members.

Responsibilities:

  • Receive and provide shift reports on the status of each resident, ensuring effective communication between shifts.
  • Deliver nursing care in accordance with administrative policies, physician’s orders, and established nursing standards.
  • Assess residents’ conditions, recognize signs and symptoms, and initiate remedial health measures as necessary, involving attending physicians when appropriate.
  • Safeguard drug and narcotic keys throughout the shift, handing them over to the Charge Nurse for the following shift.
  • Administer medications and treatments within the scope of practice, adhering to the College of Nurses’ Standards of Nursing Practice for Registered Practical Nurses.
  • Assist in maintaining residents’ records in compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Provide clear and concise communication to staff, monitor their performance, and provide orientation and training to new staff members.
  • Educate residents on good health habits and ensure courteous and tactful interactions with staff, residents’ families, and visitors.
  • Assist with the admission and discharge of residents when required.
  • Observe and monitor residents’ conditions, promptly reporting any changes to the attending physician.
  • Ensure timely completion of Incident Reports and actively participate in Continuous Quality Improvement activities.
  • Fulfill the duties of a supervisor as per the Occupational Health & Safety Act, including ensuring workers follow safety procedures and providing necessary instructions and precautions.
  • Take responsibility for resident safety and participate in staff development programs related to resident safety on an annual basis.

Qualifications:

  • Current Certificate of Competence as a Registered Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Experience in geriatric, rehabilitation, or long-term care.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Maturity, good physical and mental health, and free from communicable diseases.
  • Certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
  • Willingness to continually update knowledge through professional development opportunities.
