Description

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduate of a Registered Practical Nurse Program acceptable to the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and hold a current Certificate of Competence
  • Registered Practical Nurse, in good standing, with the CNO
  • Minimum three to five (3-5) years of recent nursing experience with the proven ability to work to full scope of practice as defined by the CNO
  • Experience working with adult and paediatric populations as well as conducting patient education
  • Functional knowledge of medical, surgical, orthopedic, paediatric, gyne/obstetric and mental health nursing
  • Current BCLS certification – maintained annually
  • Recognized physical assessment course
  • Basic arrhythmias course (or obtained within first 6 months of hire); 12 lead interpretation course (or obtained within first 6 months of hire)
  • Ability to effectively function in emergency and highly stressful situations
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team
  • Proven ability to plan and organize with good critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong public relation/interpersonal skills
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development/continuing education and participation in quality assurance activities
  • Positive work record and good attendance record; Ability to meet the physical demands of the position

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Recent ED and/or acute care setting nursing experience
  • Crisis Intervention Training (CPI)
  • Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC)
  • Knowledge of the 5-level Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) process
  • Intravenous insertion experience
  • Previous experience with LEAN methodologies

Responsibilities
  • Assess, plan, implement, modify and evaluate patient care
  • Perform ongoing assessment and evaluation of patient condition and collaborates with the RN according to established criteria
  • Perform all duties in a safe and effective manner correcting any unsafe conditions and reporting them to the RN
  • Make independent decisions within the applicable scope of practice
  • Develop and maintains both technical (i.e., equipment troubleshooting etc.) and clinical skills and competencies required to work in a critical care environment
  • Understand the rationale and criteria for Medical Directives
  • Collaborate with other members of the health care team in provision of patient care
  • Report pertinent information to the Most Responsible Physician (MRP), Registered Nurse and other members of the interdisciplinary team
  • Report unresolved concerns regarding the patient’s condition or issues, which involve interdepartmental resolution to Clinical Manager and/or delegate
  • Communicates changes in the patient’s condition to the MRP; may involve advance collaboration and consultation with the RN
  • Provide health teaching to patient and family within the RPN scope of practice
