Description
As a member of the interdisciplinary team, in collaboration with the Registered Nurse (RN) the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) provides and evaluates nursing care to meet patient’s needs; including Intravenous therapy, infusion of IV medications, administration of blood products, iron infusions and assisting with invasive procedures such as paracentesis and lumbar puncture. The RPN will participate in continued education and completion of maintenance of certifications associated with the identified nursing skills. The RPN will complete learning plans to achieve these goals. 1. Current Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse 2. Current certificates or current community college studies in asepsis, airway management, health assessment, medication administration and transcribing physician orders 3. Documented completion of a recognized IV Medication Administration, IV Management, Venipuncture and Blood and Blood Products Administration Course 4. Recent experience (within one year) in Adult IV and IV medication administration, IV management, IV insertion, Saline Locks, Venipuncture, monitoring of patients receiving blood and/or blood products 5. Recent and relevant nursing experience (within 1 year) in Adult acute medicine/surgery setting. Experience and skill in blood product administration, advanced vascular access therapy, and IV starts 6. Current CPR Certificate 7. Demonstrated ability to function within an interdisciplinary team including nursing collaboration with RN and other members of the health care team 8. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing personal/professional development 9. Demonstrated ability to communicate (written and verbal) effectively with patients, families and other members of the health care team 10. Demonstrated ability to set priorities and organize work in response to patient needs 11. Demonstrated knowledge of transfers and lifts protocols/practices 12. Demonstrated competence in applying principles of Universal Precautions and WHMIS 13. Demonstrated competence in using e-mail, database and appointment schedules software 14. Demonstrated ability to think critically
