POSITION SUMMARY:

The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) is a key member of the healthcare team, responsible for providing high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to individuals, families, and communities in a variety of settings. Over the long term, the RPN plays a vital role in promoting health, preventing illness, and delivering compassionate care to meet the complex needs of patients across their lifespan. As the healthcare system evolves, the RPN role is also expected to adapt through continuous learning, leadership, and collaboration.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Diploma in Practical Nursing from a recognized college.
  • Current registration in good standing with the provincial regulatory body (e.g., CNO in Ontario).
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Experience in long-term care, acute care, or community settings is an asset.

Responsibilities

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Direct Patient Care:
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed.
  • Monitor and assess patients’ health status and report changes.
  • Provide personal care (e.g., bathing, dressing, feeding) and support for daily living activities.
  • Document care and patient responses accurately and promptly.
  • Care Planning & Coordination:
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (RNs, physicians, therapists, etc.) to develop and implement patient care plans.
  • Participate in care conferences and contribute to discharge planning.
  • Ensure continuity of care through effective communication and documentation.
  • Health Promotion & Education:
  • Educate patients and families about health conditions, medications, and wellness practices.
  • Support preventive care measures, such as vaccinations, screenings, and chronic disease management.
  • Infection Control & Safety:
  • Adhere to infection prevention protocols and safety regulations.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for patients and staff.

LONG-TERM CAREER DEVELOPMENT & ROLE EXPANSION:

Over time, an RPN may:

  • Advance into Specialized Roles:
  • Palliative care, mental health, geriatrics, wound care, or community health.
  • Take on Leadership Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a team lead, charge nurse, or clinical educator.
  • Mentor new staff or students in the nursing profession.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement:
  • Engage in initiatives to improve patient outcomes and healthcare delivery.
  • Contribute to audits, accreditation processes, and policy development.
  • Pursue Further Education:
  • Continue professional development through courses, certifications, or bridging to Registered Nurse (RN) designation.
