Job Overview: The Staff Radiation Therapist is a registered radiation therapist - RT (T) with 0-5 years’ experience/Associate’s Degree in Allied Health (Bachelor’s Degree = +2 years) . The therapist provides care to cancer patients by administering radiation treatments which includes precise set-up, operation of equipment, dose calculations, chart and film file maintenance. The therapist also performs CT simulations and had the knowledge to construct immobilization devices and custom blocks for treatment and is knowledgeable in radiation safety and performs other duties as required. In addition, the therapist has appropriate knowledge of computers to enter charges, schedule patients for treatments and transportation, and to retrieve patient medical and demographic information. The person in this position must be trained to provide assessment, treatment or care for patients of all ages with additional education focused on the treatment or care of occasional youth adults, adult or geriatric patients. Directly reports to the Supervisor of Radiation Therapy. Performs other duties as assigned. Location: Good Samaritan Hospital Work Hours: Full-time position: 72 hours bi-weekly Day shift Weekend call rotation Job Requirements: Associate's Degree in Allied Health 0-5 years Professional experience in Allied Health Individual must be knowledgeable in Radiation Oncology, patient care, treatment and CT simulation Individual must have basic computer skills Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Job Responsibilities: Delivers accurately, a prescribed, planned course of radiation therapy. • Checks treatment calculations and treatment plan. • Compares verification images to simulation images using anatomical landmarks or fiducial markers for quality and accuracy. • Evaluates the patient daily for any side effects, reactions and therapeutic responses. • Reviews treatment discrepancies, determines causes and assists with the action plan. • Verifies the accuracy of the patient setup prior to treatment delivery. • Verifies treatment console readouts and settings prior to initiating treatment and upon termination of treatment. • Verifies patient identification and appropriateness of the procedure request. Maintains a safe work environment.• Follows Corporate and department policies and procedures especially in emergency situations. • Monitors the patient at all times during treatment. • Monitors treatment unit operation during use. Notifies Service Engineer and/or physics of any machine faults. • Wears film badge at all times and stored appropriately. • Uses PPE when necessary. • Participates in daily safety huddles. Maintains accurate, on-going patient care records. Documents clear and precise information about patient care, procedures and outcomes for continuity of care, accuracy of care and quality assurance. • Documents diagnostic, treatment and patient data in the medical record in a timely, accurate and comprehensive manner. • Documents procedural timeout. • Documents unintended outcomes or exceptions from the established criteria. • Maintains documentation of quality assurance activities, procedures and results. • Charges are entered timely, accurately and reviewed daily. • Patient appointments are managed in both EMR systems. Performs supply, equipment, and environmental related activities to meet Joint Commission, OSHA and ODH regulations. • Performs quality assurance checks on simulator and treatment unit. • Inspects ancillary devices prior to use. Notifies Lead Therapist if needs replaced or repaired. • Food is kept out of clinical areas. • Log books are maintained on linac, CT simulators and other equipment. • Constructs immobilization devices. Promotes a positive and collaborative practice atmosphere with other members of the health care team by communicating effectively and working together efficiently. • Changes in OTV are always communicated to the RN’s, MA’s and front office team members. • All patients receiving concurrent chemo and radiation treatments are scheduled appropriately. • Communicates pertinent patient related information to the physician, nurse or other appropriate health care personnel in a timely manner. • Reports any out-of-tolerance deviations to physics and dosimetry. • Follows care paths to ensure efficient and accurate workflow for positive patient treatment outcomes.
