A respiratory therapist (RT) is a healthcare professional who treats patients with breathing difficulties: Patients RTs treat patients with a range of conditions, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, and cystic fibrosis. Responsibilities RTs perform a variety of tasks, including: Interviewing and examining patients Consulting with physicians to develop treatment plans Performing diagnostic tests, such as pulmonary function tests and blood gas analysis Administering oxygen, medication, and aerosol therapy Managing ventilators Providing chest physical therapy Monitoring and documenting patient progress Teaching patients how to use equipment and take medications.
