JOB SUMMARY

Regulatory Affairs Specialist oversees the regulation process for products requiring certifying body, customers, and all other business partners’ approval, including filing necessary applications and handling all regulatory inquiries/interactions. This position ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and has full authority of regulatory team actions and extensive knowledge of department processes. The Regulatory Affairs Specialist reports to the Senior Director of FSQA/RD.

REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary education in Food Science, Regulatory Affairs, Microbiology, or a related discipline.
  • 3–5 years of experience in regulatory affairs, food safety, or quality assurance within the food manufacturing industry.
  • Strong working knowledge of regulatory frameworks including CFIA, Health Canada, FDA (U.S.), and Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR).
  • Familiarity with international food labeling laws and trade regulations applicable to export markets.
  • Experience preparing and submitting documentation for product registrations, packaging, labelling, and import/export compliance.
  • Understanding of allergen declarations, nutrition labeling, and ingredient standards across North American and international markets.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to liaise with certifying bodies, regulatory agencies, and cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage product audits, agency inspections, and internal documentation systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with regulatory or QMS platforms is an asset.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple regulatory timelines concurrently.

Responsibilities
  • Establish and lead a process of identifying, tracking, and influencing proposed and pending regulatory changes potentially impacting Sunco Foods supply chains and finished good products.
  • Identify proposed and pending SFCR and FDA regulatory changes impacting food service and retail product labels and supply chain and maintain current knowledge of relevant regulations and final rules.
  • Translate and interpret proposed regulatory changes in terms of Sunco impacts; proactively engage partners and support mitigation activity.
  • Review all regulatory submission materials to ensure timeliness, accuracy, comprehensiveness, or compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Serve as the expert on regulatory risks as an input into Risk Management processes.
  • Collaborate between and within market Supply Chain Teams to advise on food safety strategy and compliance goals.
  • Provide representation and external engagement on regulatory-related topics with organization working groups/teams.
  • Develop technical label copy for company and private brand products, provide information to the business on regulatory matters, and manage issues pertaining to labeling and advertising.
  • Track and report on market critical metrics related to critical-to-food-safety activities and processes; verify and demonstrate compliance.
  • Support supplier/category and reputational risk management by demonstrating regulatory/technical subject matter expertise.
  • Manage activities such as regulatory agency inspections, or product recalls and manage the preparation and submission of regulatory agency applications, reports, or correspondence.
