Job Description:
Position Purpose summary:
The Intake Worker is responsible for delivering exceptional direct support, assistance and encouragement to the Evangeline Residence clients. The accomplishing of the Salvation Army’s mission starts with the Residential Workers’ ability to provide the residents with the resources they require to maximize their full potential in all spheres of life body, mind and soul. It is imperative that the incumbent align the delivery of their services with the core values by committing to a high standard of excellence and treating all staff and residents with respect and dignity. The Residential Worker provides a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors.
Accountabilities:
1. Signs in for shift and reads all Logbook entries
2. Ensure enforcement of house rules, including behavior modification discussions, giving/reviewing warnings and behavioral contracts
3. Handles the admission, orientation for new intakes. Read and review house rules with new intake and complete the Triage and Survey Monkey
4. Enters all Intakes and Discharges on SMIS, process intake paperwork and upload necessary documents on SMIS
5. Accurately records day-to-day happening using appropriate methods; maintains logbooks and completes incident reports
6. Monitors the activities of the residents and maintains availability for personal, practical and moral support
7. Provides the residents with their stored medication having them complete the medication distribution form, including providing safe storage and recording of prescribed medication, as requested by the resident.
8. Liaises with internal referral sources and external agencies as needed
9. Make announcements to residents as needed
10. Write friendly reminders to residents who are not in the building and follow up accordingly
11. Respond to and direct all telephone inquiries/voicemails accordingly
12. Record all facility issues and concerns on the appropriate Work Order/Supply Order document
13. Assists and participates in resident functions on special occasions or activities
14. Place used walkie talkie on charger at the end of each shift – turn walkies off before charging at the end of shift
15. Tidy front desk/intake area throughout the shift
16. Assist residents who are triaged at level 1 and/or those without counsellor with any resources or referrals that maybe required
17. Follow rotational tasks posted monthly schedule posted on Communication Board in the Intake Office
18. Approve overnight passes and curfew extensions and bedrest

  1. Update short and long room sheet after each intake and admission
  2. Print out SMIS bed log at end of shift and ensure that SMIS, the bed roster and Logbook match all shift activity, and ensure SMIS Queue is up to date
  3. Keep a record of bag lunch, late dinner requests and food allergies (update kitchen board accordingly)
  4. Announce mealtimes, secure volunteers for tidying up and to say Grace
  5. Greet Visitors, complete Covid-10 screening, and direct as necessary
  6. Assist residents with signing up for television, computer, and laundry time and monitor usage and provide support as needed
  7. Contact elevator repair as needed
  8. Keeps a record of TTC tokens and keys distributed and confirm how many tokens and keys are remaining before and at the conclusion of the shift
  9. Mail needs to be checked by management before distributing to residents. Mail to be returned to sender to be handed to Intake Supervisor
  10. Oversee mealtimes and provide supervision in the basement area during breakfast, morning snacks and lunch
  11. Distribute clothing and personal hygiene items as requested by the residents
  12. Carries out wellness checks throughout the building in accordance with policies and procedures
  13. Bag/label residents’ belongings and place in storage room that have been left behind according to policies and procedures
  14. Cleaning/disinfect beds and make available for new intake in the absence of housekeeping
  15. Complete rounds at 9am to make sure residents leave their rooms and conduct rounds with the purpose of addressing any health and safety hazards
  16. Complete rounds at 3pm, 8:30pm, 10:30pm to make sure residents leave their rooms and conduct rounds with the purpose of addressing any health and safety hazards
  17. Complete bed check and rounds at 12:30am/3am and 6am and discharge as needed, as per policy and procedure
  18. Document all rounds accordingly
  19. Clean up after snacks and wash dishes and cups used from snack.
  20. Distribute late meals, bag lunches, resident food boxes, coffee/tea, and serve snacks (7am and 10am)
  21. Clean resident fridge – go over residents’ items and make sure expired or non-processed food is stored.
  22. Oversee mealtimes and provide supervision in the dining room area during breakfast, morning snacks and lunch

  24. Wash trays used by catering when ER cooks are not onsite
  25. Empty garbage cans in the dining room as needed
  26. Sweep/mop kitchen area as needed
  27. Distribute clothing and personal hygiene items as requested by the residents
  28. Ensure shower room is clean and disinfected, liaise with housekeeping as needed
  29. Clean up after snacks and wash dishes and cups used from snack.
  30. Accept and document in the communication log donations received; place donations in storage bins to be washed, sorted and stored in Donation Room

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • High School Graduate with further education in Social Sciences Field or equivalent experience
  • Certification in CPR/First Aid
  • Certification in Crisis Intervention
  • Police check clearanc

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

  • Basic computer and clerical skills
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Prior related experience, including experience with frontline work in a social service setting
  • Knowledge and understanding of Homelessness, Addictions Counselling and Mental Healt
