We are currently accepting applications for a Relief Shelter Support Worker position

SKILL, NATURE AND SCOPE

  • Actively practices the Mission, Vision and Values of Good Shepherd Ministries.
  • An ability to appreciate the complexity and demands of ‘hard to serve’ individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Diploma or equivalent in social services.
  • A minimum of two (2) years experience in shelter work is required.
  • Knowledge of WHMIS requirements in using chemical cleaning solutions.
  • CPR, First Aid and AED Certificates acquired through a recognized course.
  • Demonstrated clerical and administrative skills acquired through equivalent work related experience.
  • Excellent written communication skills to produce routine memos, correspondence and reports.
  • The ability to prioritize work overload is essential.
  • Excellent written communication and interpersonal skills to maintain team work with the ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada.
    Job Type: Casual
    Pay: $21.35-$22.03 per hour

Responsibilities
  • To carry out all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of Good Shepherd Ministries.
  • To provide service in a dignified, respectful and hospitable manner that reflects the Mission, Vision and Values of Good Shepherd Ministries and which integrates non-discrimination/anti-oppression/anti-racism frameworks.
  • To observe all health and safety rules and regulations and to work in a manner that minimizes risk to yourself, clients, co-workers and others as well as to the property of Good Shepherd Ministries. To perform your job responsibilities in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Policies and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • To comply with the established rules of operation, procedures, policies and code of conduct.
  • To comply with work scheduling and attendance requirements according to policy and practices.
  • To carry out head counts regularly throughout the night to ensure an exact record of occupancy load.
  • To assign vacant beds and complete the necessary records and forms upon admission.
  • To update the City of Toronto’s Shelter Management Information System (SMIS) database with new admissions and to perform the routine bed checks and recollection of SMIS in accordance with the City’s Shelter, Housing and Supports Services directives.
  • To assist clients with questions or queries.
  • To secure all external doors and first floor windows, check all fire exit doors and fire exit routes to ensure they are operational and free from obstruction.
  • To inform ‘On Call’ co-workers and take necessary action in the event of any fire, medical or physical emergency as instructed.
  • To carry out janitorial duties including the cleaning of floors, washrooms, stairwells, ramp, dining room and offices as directed.
  • To maintain an adequate supply of toilet tissue and towels in co-workers and client washrooms.
  • To collect soiled towels and linens from the dormitories and return them for laundering. To carry out laundry duties as instructed and return the correct number of clean folded linen to each dormitory floor, and ensure the correct number of clean folded towels are available for registration.
  • To wash, dry and fold kitchen laundry.
  • To return emptied garbage and recycle bins to their correct storage in the car park.
  • To prepare kitchen for breakfast service as instructed and assist with breakfast preparation when required.
  • To check register for early wake up calls and wake clients for breakfast at the requested time.
  • To distribute lunches for clients going to work.
  • To document client information that may be needed by other departments/the concerning shift.
  • To maintain the confidentiality policy and ethical standards of Good Shepherd Ministries at all times.
  • To perform any other related tasks that may from time to time be assigned by the Manager, Hospitality Services, or delegate.
    The successful candidate must take initiative and work effectively both independently and as part of team to accomplish daily tasks.
