Primary objective
Under the direction of the Team Leader provide family support services to vulnerable children and their families residing in remote communities.
Work in partnership with others to provide safety and targeted support to families, provide place-based statutory services of the department and
support the work of visiting Child Protection and Youth Outreach staff. Support agency activities in relation to community education, development
and consultation activities and proactively work with the community to facilitate access to departmental services including i.e. NT Concession and
NT Seniors Recognition Schemes.
Context statement
The Remote Child and Family Safety Program provides place-based services in remote communities with an integrated safety and support focus
which combines domestic, family and sexual violence responses and interventions that are flexible and dependant on community needs.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Deliver evidence based and culturally competent case work and case management services in line with departmental policies and procedures
to vulnerable children and their families.
2. Work collaboratively with others to enhance the safety and capacity of families and communities to care for their children and young people.
3. Provide intensive family support where place-based intervention is the safest and most effective approach.
4. In partnership with families, undertake comprehensive strengths and needs assessments to identify case plan goals which address the child
safety concerns for children.
5. Undertake statutory case work where it is determined that a place-based intervention is the safest and most effective approach.
6. Provide statutory case management services to children in stable long-term placements with kinship carers or departmental carers within the
community.
7. Ensure the availability of reliable data through the accurate recording of information on client information and case management systems.
8. Demonstrate commitment to own professional development through active participation in professional supervision and required workplace
training.
9. Participate in the Children and Families After-hours Service (Women’s Safe House).
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A degree of an Australian tertiary institution, which gives eligibility for membership of the Australian Community Workers Association,
Australian Association of Social Workers, Australian Psychological Society, or equivalent OR Diploma of Child, Youth and Family Intervention
AND Vocational Graduate Certificate in Community Services Practice (Statutory Child Protection) OR Graduate Certificate in Safe
Communities (Child Protection).
2. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, family and community structures, and an ability to communicate and work
constructively and sensitively with people from diverse cultures.
3. Knowledge of case planning and case management approaches including demonstrated experience in conducting strengths-based
assessments and in working in partnership with a range of other providers including Child Protection professionals to respond to the needs
of vulnerable children and their families.
4. Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and monitor case planning processes in line with departmental policy that help maximise better
outcomes for local children and families.
5. Demonstrated computer skills and an ability to undertake training in the program’s computer-based data management system.
6. Well-developed oral, written and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to effectively negotiate outcomes, build and maintain
effective internal and external working relationships.
7. Current NT driver’s licence or ability to obtain and ability to travel in 4WD or light aircraft and undertake travel including overnight stays.
Desirable
1. Knowledge of the legislative and policy frameworks relevant to statutory child and family welfare practice in the NT.
2. Knowledge of family violence in remote Aboriginal communities and the impact of family violence on extended family networks.
3. Previous experience of living and/or working in a remote Aboriginal Community.
