Within the spirit of “Making People’s Dreams Come True”, this position is responsible for identifying compelling stories in the community and informing the public in a factual, timely manner. These duties are accomplished while delivering Raving Fans customer service to both internal and external customers. Responsibilities: * Collect and analyze information about newsworthy events to write about for publication or broadcast. * Curate a stable of reliable sources and effectively evaluate leads and tips to develop story ideas. * Gather and verify information and authentic details through interview, observation, and research. * Translate bureaucratic lingo into clear, concise, and reader-friendly language. * Organize material, determines emphasis, and writes stories according to style, standards and deadlines established by the editor. * Specialize in one type of reporting, such as sports, politics, business, etc. * Edit and assist in editing stories for broadcast and appear on affiliated television programs or radio broadcasts. * Occasionally write stories for The Villages Magazine. * Foster a culture of collaboration and contribute to a healthy team dynamic. * All other duties as assigned. Education & Experience Requirements: * Bachelor's degree (B.A.) or equivalent and six (6) months to one (1) year of related experience either in college journalism or outside experience with a daily newspaper. * Experience with sports writing preferred. * Must be computer proficient and familiar with online databases and other research tools. * Must possess a working knowledge of news photography. * This position is subjected to The Villages Vehicle Safety Program and its policies as it requires the use of personal vehicles for company business. Please refer to the Vehicle Safety Program for the policies and procedures that this position is required to follow. * A Valid Driver’s License with a record acceptable to company standards is required for this position.
