EDUCATION:

University undergraduate degree in Legal, Economics or related discipline is required or four years recent experience (defined as within the last five years) working in an academic environment performing the same or similar tasks. This education equivalency is in addition to the experiential requirements outlined below. Courses in contract and intellectual property law an asset.

EXPERIENCE:

The position requires extensive knowledge of an extensive body of rules, procedures, methods, and operations of a particular discipline typically attained through a minimum of 3 years related work experience in an institutional (post-secondary, agency, government) setting in order to assess, think critically, and apply the concepts needed to review and analyze complex terms and conditions in research agreements.

SKILLS:

Advanced knowledge of:
Negotiations and contract terms
Complex legal language addressing intellectual property, confidentiality, indemnification and insurance, and publication requirements
Contracts, research and intellectual property laws
Academic research processes and practices, including research applications, agreements, and related issues.
Research accounting policies and procedures

Responsibilities

Drafts, reviews, provides recommendations on research funding agreements (industry, government, foundation) and non-funding research agreements (collaboration, network, material transfer, confidentiality, data use) in accordance with York’s and funder policies and procedures and under the direct supervision of the Research Agreements Manager, negotiates the changes to these agreements, preparing information and documentation in preparation for simple and complex negotiations and effectively communicating York and funder administrative and financial administration requirements to researchers, administrators and staff in Research Accounting, Office of the Counsel, and Risk Management and Insurance. Provides assistance and advice to researchers and other members of the York community with respect to pre- and post-research agreements administration. Performs initial risk assessment, identification, negotiation and protection of the legal and financial rights and obligations of the University as there is a certain degree of risk component involved in the review of research agreements. Input data related to personal portfolio into the enterprise management system and prepare notice of awards to establish cost centres for successful funded research agreements in a timely and accurate manner. Review of data entry for the unit and identifying errors and fixing those errors, as well as responding to all data reporting queries from the Executive Director, Research & Innovation Services, AVPs and VP, as required.
