JOB SUMMARY

The Michigan Public Health - Substance Use Policy and Economic Research (M-SUPER) Network at the University of Michigan School of Public Health is seeking an independent and motivated Research Area Specialist to join our team. The M-SUPER Network is an interdisciplinary, interinstitutional consortium of faculty, investigators, and trainees. It is led by Dr. Thuy Nguyen who serves as the director of the M-SUPER Network and the John G. Searle Assistant Professor of Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. The Network members employ rigorous quantitative approaches and leverage access to multiple large databases to address pressing substance use policy knowledge gaps.
The ideal candidate for this position will be an individual with experience in managing the many details of a complex project. A successful candidate should have experience in both project management and data analysis. We are focused on finding someone who will be an engaged team member and good communicator. Within the M-SUPER network, a successful applicant will be part of a small, dynamic research team responsible for conducting multiple NIH-funded projects. These projects will be related to data analysis, modeling, and dissemination.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS*

  • Experience with NIH research project management and grant proposal development/submission
  • At least 1 year of experience working with claims databases, such as Medicare, Medicaid, or commercial claims
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in economics, public health, epidemiology, data science, business administration, project management, communications or a related field.
  • For the Senior level position, a Master’s degree (or doctorate degree) in a related field is required, along with 5 to 6 years of relevant research experience. For the Intermediate level position, a Master’s degree in a related field is preferred, along with 4 to 5 years of relevant research experience.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the principal investigator (PI) with administering and implementing multiple NIH R01 projects
  • Coordinate IRB approvals and annual grant reporting to sponsors
  • Monitor operating budgets and sponsored funds
  • Assist with hiring and onboarding processes
  • Assist the director of the M-SUPER network in proposal development
  • Contributing intellectually to the design, programming, analysis, reporting, documentation, and dissemination of research projects
  • Assist the PI in overseeing study coordination and supervising research staff
  • Assist with the dissemination of project products to stakeholders and the media, including traditional and social media
  • Create materials related to the dissemination of research (e.g., visual abstracts)
  • In collaboration with the PI and other team members, perform statistical analyses and develop data visualizations for large health insurance claims databases based upon the design of the project
  • Design, test, implement, and debug SAS programs using SQL merges to clean, manage, and merge analytic datasets for large health insurance claims databases based upon the design of the project
  • Conduct advanced statistical analyses, such as regression modeling, multiple imputation, multilevel modeling, and survey analysis
