Department Overview:
The purpose of this position is to participate in the OHSU PREP program. PREP is a workforce training program aimed at broadening access to careers in biomedical research. Our program currently supports OHSU Research Assistants who are intent on earning their doctoral degree as part of their long-term career goals.

The primary aims of OHSU PREP are to:

• Provide transformative research experiences using a milestone-driven structure that closely mirrors the experiences of graduate students; and
• Promote career exploration and long-term career self-efficacy by integrating a comprehensive mentor network and tailored career exploration strategies.

OHSU PREP activities promote scientific identity formation and empower scholars to effectively navigate their career transitions.
PREP is a 12-month program that features a series of non-credit short courses, monthly seminars, and quarterly lectures on special topics. Short courses ("Growth Sessions") topics include: preparing and submitting graduate applications, mock interviews with postdocs and faculty, experimental design and statistical analysis, and scientific communication. PREP scholars also work closely with individuals in their mentor network, including their research mentor, a career mentor, and mentor buddy.

Function/Duties of Position:

• Performance of laboratory research with training in modern biomedical research concepts and techniques. Utilizes knowledge of specific scientific protocols to analyze, interpret, and/or make deductions based on data obtained through scientific experimentation. Writes reports and presents data based on findings from experiments conducted for assigned projects.
• Participation in journal clubs, lab meetings, graduate courses, skills enrichment, professional identity enrichment, and research papers. Maintains accurate records of experiments and analysis performed based on specific experiments for a given project, conducts literature searches, and maintains and up-to-date knowledge of all current methods of experimentation through professional reading assignments.
• Meeting standards of the program as set by the program director and the participant’s research mentor with regard to effective communication with peers, lab personnel and program personnel.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s in relevant field OR
• Associate’s AND
• 3 years of relevant experience OR
• 4 years of relevant experience OR
• Equivalent combination of training and experience
• Experience working in a research laboratory setting through coursework, internships, volunteering, or employment
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a variety of diverse staff, co-workers, investigators
• High level of self-motivation and accountability
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision on assigned research projects
• Ability to set up and operate laboratory equipment, prepare materials, perform experimental procedures, record and consolidate research data, and execute planned research activities using observation, measurement, and analytical techniques
• Ability to prepare reports and presentations of results obtained through experiments
• Strong communication skills with the ability to plan, document, analyze, and report data

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s in relevant biomedical field and intent to pursue a graduate research degree (Ph.D.)

Additional Details:
Typical basic science laboratory environment including use of chemical and biological reagents and possible exposure to rodents. May require evening or weekend work.
