Description
The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Principal Investigator.
The primary role and focus will be on the screening and daily recruitment of participants for the PARTUM Trial, a non-inferiority randomized controlled trial to determine if low-dose aspirin is non-inferior to usual care blood thinner injections to prevent venous thromboembolism (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism) in postpartum individuals at risk of thrombosis. The Clinical Research Assistant will work mainly independently on day-to-day duties under the direction of the Principal Investigator and the Central PARTUM Clinical Trial Multicentre Coordinator. The Clinical Research Assistant will report to the Principal Investigator.
The Clinical Research Assistant should demonstrate competent, comprehensive and coordinated care, and education to patients, and their families, relating to clinical research trials. The Clinical Research Assistant is a largely independent role requiring the ability to execute daily work using sound judgment. This position demands higher order problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Daily visits to the Antepartum, Triage, Labor & Delivery, Postpartum Units and outpatient clinics located at Foothills Medical Centre
  • Possibility of traveling to other sites, including clinics at Richmond Road Diagnostic and Treatment Centre (RRDTC) or other hospital sites
  • Assess patient eligibility, review necessary patient records, collaborate with nursing staff
  • Provide any necessary teaching, study materials and review future follow-up plans, in keeping with standard approved protocol and research procedures
  • Approach potential trial candidates with a positive and calm demeanor
  • Collect and maintain accurate screening logs and study-related documents
  • Perform data entry into a custom electronic data collection system, and for other studies data entry with REDCap and Excel databases
  • Complete requisitions for other research studies

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors degree
  • Minimum 1-2 years of related experience
  • Completion of ICH/GCP training, or must be willing to obtain
  • Knowledge and experience with the University of Calgary’s clinical research process
  • Experience working on the labor and delivery unit or with pregnant/postpartum participants is an asset
  • Good clinical judgment and ability to practice independently, as well as able to work and communicate in a team-based environment
  • Superior organizational and time management skills
  • Strong computer and data entry skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects with competing priorities
  • Ability to solve complex problems, highly analytical
