Description

We are a young, dynamic, research-oriented team, focusing on questions of international trade and trade policy. As maintainers of the Kiel Trade Indicator, we are leveraging real-time vessel information and state-of-the-art prediction tools to forecast trade flows.
We are looking for a motivated research assistant (30h/month) to support development and maintenance at the earliest possible date.

What we offer:

  • Work on cutting-edge prediction models using deep learning
  • Hands-on experience in maintaining a policy relevant product
  • Insights into quantitative work and trade policy research
  • Space for developing creative solutions
  • Participate in various Kiel Institute seminars and events

Applicants will be asked to perform the following tasks:

  • Technical monitoring/supervision of a deep learning prediction model
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of the model and its infrastructure
  • Development of additional features
  • Data preparation/first level support

We are looking for a student, who:

  • Holds a bachelor’s degree in economics, computer/data science, or a related field
  • Is proficient in R/Python (knowledge of SQL/Git is also desirable)
  • Thinks critically and works independently
  • Performs conscientious and clean coding
  • Possesses some knowledge of deep learning and ideally has experience in implementing a neural network

The position is situated at the intersection of economics and computer science, hence students with an interest in the application of both fields are strongly encouraged to apply. German language skills are not required. Please note that you must be enrolled as a student to be considered for this position.
Important: The successful applicant will be required to be present in Kiel for at least two months to become acquainted with the team and tasks. During this time, low-cost accommodation in the Kiel Institute’s “Haus Weltclub” might be possible.
The Kiel Institute for the World Economy attaches great importance to diversity. We welcome every application, regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion/belief, disability, age as well as sexual orientation.
In order to make it easier to combine family and career, we offer the possibility, in consultation, to organize working hours very individually, e.g. through various part-time models or teleworking. Childcare is available for emergency situations. You can also find more information about this here.
The Kiel Institute is committed to the employment of people with disabilities. Therefore, severely disabled applicants and those with equal rights will be given preferential consideration if they are suitable.
Please apply via the homepage under the online job advertisement by 07.03.2025 including a cover letter, CV, current academic transcript with GPA, as well as a relevant coding sample under the identification number “0125TradeHiwi01”. The submission of an application photo is expressly waived. For any queries regarding the position or the application process, feel free to reach out to Carsten Brockhaus.
