POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Research Assistant III in the Brown Cancer Center will be responsible for assisting with studies involving bench work, tissue culture and rodent models to understand the role of an enzyme in cancer development and spread and to examine the effects of inhibition of the enzyme in cancer development. We employ genetic mouse models, primary and transformed cell cultures and molecular biological techniques in our work. Applicants should have previous experience with in vivo experiments with mice and with molecular and cell biology techniques including PCR, Western blotting, tissue culture and cell-based assays. The position will involve providing technical support in a cancer research laboratory using molecular and cell biology techniques and animal models. Duties will include PCR, genotyping, Western blotting, tissue culture, transfection and assistance with mouse colony management and in vivo studies with transgenic and knockout mice. The position will also involve data analysis, laboratory maintenance and training of junior staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Animal studies (including breeding of mice, genotyping, tumor implantation and monitoring and harvesting tissues).
  • Tissue culture (maintenance of cell lines, plating and treating cells with agents in vitro).
  • Cell based assays including measurement of ATP, apoptosis and cell death, flow cytometry, plasmid preparation (for use in silencing proteins), transfection of cells, PCR and Western blotting for protein analysis.
  • Experimental notation, completion of training, training junior staff and supervising students, data preparation and analyses and general laboratory maintenance are also essential duties with this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Practical experience with molecular and cellular biology techniques and animal tumor models.
  • Expertise in flow cytometry.
  • Experience with tissue culture including the ability to perform transfections with RNAi and plasmids, propagation of cell lines and clones and testing inhibitors on cells.
  • Experience with Cell based assays will include studies such as ATP measurement, enzyme assays and flow cytometry. Animal studies will include breeding of transgenics, genotyping and xenograft studies in mice.
  • Experience with or expected to learn to present data in the form of graphs and powerpoint slides and assist in the design and modification of experimental techniques.
  • Experience with or expected to perform related library research and prepare materials required for experiments.

The Brown Cancer Center encourages candidates to apply who have demonstrated the capacity to create supportive work environments, collaborate effectively on teams, and serve the students we admit and aim to attract.

Responsibilities
  • Animal studies (including breeding of mice, genotyping, tumor implantation and monitoring and harvesting tissues).
