An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Epidemiologist at Research Assistant / Research Fellow grade to join the Centre for Global Non-Communicable Diseases in the Institute for Global Health (IGH) at UCL.
This role offers an opportunity for the successful candidate to join the RESPOND-Africa partnership within IGH working specifically around the prevention and management of HIV and non-communicable diseases in Africa. RESPOND-Africa is a large collegial and supportive group spread across UCL, Tanzania and Uganda and with partners across Europe. We cover multiple disciplines including epidemiology, health economics, social science and clinical trials. The partnership is built on an ethos of openness and equality across disciplines and across diverse cultures.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The main purpose of the role is to provide support to the co-ordination, monitoring and data analysis of a large phase III diabetes prevention trial in East Africa. This will involve close working and communication with African colleagues, PIs and local teams, and data management and statistical skills to support ongoing trial activities. Monitoring of activities, interaction with PIs and local teams, and ethics and steering committees, oversight of data collection systems. The post-holder will interact with data managers, setting up processes to monitor ongoing activities and conducting statistical analyses to support colleagues in publishing and presenting statistical findings.
The post-holder will also be required to support the analysis of data and writing up of findings from a recently completed trial on the integrated delivery of HIV, diabetes and hypertension care, as well as develop new proposals for further trials on these topics.
The post-holder will also deliver some teaching in epidemiology and statistics and will provide both pastoral and project supervision to MSc students in IGH. Key working relationships will include Professor Shabbar Jaffar and other trial Investigators, trial co-ordinators and data managers based in Uganda and Tanzania, and epidemiology colleagues in the Institute and more widely in East Africa.
The post-holder will be based at the Institute for Global Health, London and will be required to travel domestically and internationally to support trials or present research (less than 30 days per year).
There will be opportunities to attend relevant training courses.
This is a full-time role (i.e. 1.0 FTE, 36.5 hours per week) and it is available until December 2026.

Appointment will be made at Grade 6B unless the applicant has been awarded a PhD or has equivalent substantial working experience in relevant discipline (e.g. statistics or epidemiology or global health) when appointment will be made at Grade 7.
Salary range:
Grade 6B: £38,607 to £41,255 per annum (including London Allowance), depending on experience
Grade 7: £44,480 to £ 51,860 per annum (including London Allowance), depending on experience
