Description
The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) invites applications for Research Engineer or Research Fellow positions in the areas of low-power electronics, embedded systems, and energy-efficient hardware design for next-generation aerial robotics. The selected candidate will play a central role in designing lightweight, energy-optimized electronics that enable long-endurance, power-constrained drone platforms. Key Responsibilities Design custom PCBs for lightweight, low-power drone platforms, including sensor interfaces, power regulation, embedded processors, and communication modules. Develop power-efficient electronics architectures optimized for endurance-constrained aerial vehicles. Implement and evaluate energy harvesting technologies (solar, kinetic, thermal, vibrational, or tethered power). Design and optimize battery management systems (BMS) and energy management algorithms for dynamic flight conditions. Develop low-power embedded firmware for real-time sensing and control. Conduct hardware prototyping, testing, and validation for field-deployable drone systems. Perform trade studies on weight, efficiency, thermal performance, and power consumption. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or related fields. Strong experience in PCB design (Altium, KiCad, Eagle, OrCAD, etc.). Hands-on experience with low-power circuit design, including DC-DC converters, PMICs, sensor drivers, and embedded microcontrollers. Knowledge of energy harvesting mechanisms and ultra-low-power hardware design methodologies. Strong foundation in battery systems, power electronics, and battery management systems. Experience with embedded systems programming (C/C++, MicroPython, etc.)
Responsibilities
The selected candidate will design custom PCBs for lightweight, low-power drone platforms and develop power-efficient electronics architectures. They will also implement energy harvesting technologies and conduct hardware prototyping and testing for drone systems.
