Description
The Department of Statistics and Data Science at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is conducting a collaborative project with the Racing Laboratory of the Hong Kong Jockey Club. The Racing Laboratory undertakes various types of research and testing on horses and riders to identify the use of prohibited substances or prohibited methods. It plays an essential role in doping control to ensure the fairness and integrity of racing and other equine sports and the welfare of the horses, and is a leading laboratory in the field of equine drug testing. This position offers a unique opportunity to be employed by CUHK while being embedded within the world-class Racing Laboratory at the Sha Tin Racecourse. Applicants should have (i) a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or a related discipline; (ii) good communication skills in English and Chinese; (iii) strong sense of responsibility and good at organising research data; and (iv) preferably hands-on experience with PCR, next-generation sequencing platform, and/or liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. The appointee will carry out research to discover and validate biomarkers for equine doping control. Duties include (a) working with a multidisciplinary team of biochemists, chemical analysts, bioinformaticians, and statisticians to analyse specimens for biomarkers and prohibited substances; (b) conducting proteomic and transcriptomic research using mass spectrometry and next-generation sequencing platforms; (c) performing routine instrument calibration, maintenance, and other assigned laboratory duties; and (d) ensuring compliance with quality assurance procedures in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and requirements from the accreditation body (HKAS).
