JOB DESCRIPTION:

Research associate to support execution of biomedical research on a National Institutes of Health (NIH) - funded project to study perinatal infectious disease and role of infectious disease on cardiovascular disease. The research associate is also responsible for coordinating and conducting other activities related to the study that includes maintaining lab inventories, ordering supplies, preparing reagents, training students, and maintaining the equipment and laboratory.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Qualifications/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Requires a minimum of Master’s (or equivalent) degree, or Bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree, plus at least 2 years of post-Bachelor’s work experience in a role that is demonstrably similar to that of a Research Assistant.
  • Knowledge and understanding of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, bacteriology, microbiology, and cell biology.
  • Ability to build upon current technical skills and learn new experimental techniques.
  • Ability to independently develop new assays and execute assigned research projects.
  • Ability to perform literature searches to develop new protocols.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data, write reports, and compile data in a logical manner.
  • Maintain meticulous records and generate standard operating procedures.
  • Skills to manage the operation and maintenance of the laboratory.
  • Capacity to work collaboratively with investigators in a multidisciplinary academic setting.
  • Ability to be trained to handle Risk Group 2 organisms and hazardous chemicals safely.
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment, including spectrophotometers, thermocyclers, microscopes, biosafety cabinets, autoclaves, plate readers, fluorescence microscopes, and electrophoresis power supplies.
  • Ability to conduct biochemical, molecular biological, bacterial, and microbiological experiments under limited supervision.
  • Experience in rodent handling is required.
  • Ability to work and communicate with PI and laboratory members effectively and collaboratively. Must be highly motivated, responsible, dependable and a self-starter.
  • Must have excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office. Experience using advanced Excel functions and GraphPad Prism is preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in an organized fashion.

  • BS or MS in biology, microbiology, physiology, pharmacology, neuroscience, genetics, or related discipline.

  • Have previous experience in a BSL-3 facility and performing immunology and/or cardiovascular related lab techniques.
