ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The University of Sydney is seeking a dedicated and culturally grounded Research Fellow to join a research team focused on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health, with particular emphasis on LGBTQIA+ health and addiction medicine. The successful candidate will contribute to impactful research projects, engage with community stakeholders, and support the development of culturally appropriate health promotion and educational materials. This position offers an exciting opportunity to build research expertise in a supportive academic environment that values Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander knowledge, community engagement, and inclusive research practice.

  • A relevant Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander LGBTQIA+ communities and Aboriginal people who may have used drugs or alcohol
  • Demonstrated experience in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health research, particularly in the areas of LGBTQIA+ health and addiction medicine, with a strong understanding of culturally safe research practices
  • Proven skills in research coordination and administration, including managing research data, conducting scientific literature reviews, supporting grant application processes, and contributing to academic outputs
  • Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to plan, prioritise, and manage multiple tasks or projects in a research-intensive and higher education environment
  • Proficiency in data analysis and research software, combined with a high level of computer literacy, attention to detail, and critical thinking skills to support research activities and problem-solving
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team and provide mentorship or support to students and colleagues.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct research and scholarly activities in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health, with a focus on addiction medicine and the health of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander LGBTQIA+ communities, either independently or as part of a collaborative team
  • Engage effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities, including LGBTQIA+ individuals and people with lived experience of illicit drug use, to ensure culturally safe and inclusive research practices
  • Assist in the development of culturally relevant health promotion materials, research outputs, and/or curriculum content for Aboriginal community members and students
  • Contribute to research design, data collection, and analysis, refining independent research skills under the guidance of senior academic staff
  • Support the learning and development of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students and colleagues through informal mentoring and knowledge sharing
  • Participate in school or faculty meetings, administrative tasks, and contribute to a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative workplace culture that values Indigenous knowledge systems and perspectives.
