ABOUT THE ROLE

Are you an excellent researcher in higher education, particularly in pedagogic research within Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplinary contexts? Would you like to play a key role in advancing Imperial College London’s ambition to become a global leader in innovative, evidence-based education? If so, this exciting and challenging opportunity could be the ideal next step in your career.
The Centre for Higher Education Research and Scholarship (CHERS) at Imperial College London has an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate to join a team working on a Digital Innovation Funded Project: Using Custom Chatbots to Navigate New Norms: An Integrated Approach to Generative AI in Learning, Teaching, and Assessment in STEM (including Medicine).

As part of this innovative project, you will contribute significantly to the literature review, data collection, analysis and communication with colleagues across the University to advance digital education capabilities. Given that the project is also focused on specific pedagogical outputs, you will work with students and staff across departments and services to develop custom chatbots, informed by empirical insights from the project’s educational research. This work will contribute to developing feedback literacy, reducing staff workloads, and promoting inclusive and efficient educational practices.

  • Take initiatives in the planning of educational research
  • Conduct reviews and summaries of relevant educational, sociological, and psychological literature for the project.
  • Design and undertake participant recruitment and data collection.
  • Analyse and interpret qualitative data, using appropriate qualitative research methods and techniques (e.g., NVivo).
  • Report and present information to the project team, including production of findings reports.
  • Maintain highly organised and accurate records of research work.
  • Liaise with colleagues from wider University departments, such as CHERS, EDU, Education Office, Student Services, Student Union, staff across faculties, the EDI team and ICT on matters related to learning, teaching and assessment/feedback practices as well as the chatbot development and training.
  • Work with technical experts and students to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of the customised chatbots through metrics, focus groups, and staff/student feedback.
  • Keep accurate and up-to-date records of activities related to the project.
  • Contribute to academic publication writing.
  • Contribute to the promotion and dissemination of the project and its pedagogical outputs within the University and at external conference and presentations.
  • Comply with University policies relating to health and safety, equality of opportunity and data management.
