DESCRIPTION:

A Research Associate position in the area of metabolic engineering, systems microbiology, enzyme screening and engineering is available at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry, University of Toronto. This position is a part of collaborative research projects within BioZone at the University of Toronto.
Qualifications:
The position requires a PhD in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or Biochemistry with 2-3 years of experience in microbiology, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, bioremediation, inorganic chemistry or related discipline.

PREFERENCE GIVEN TO CANDIDATES WITH EXPERIENCE WITH:

  • Strong background in microbial fermentation and physiology
  • Strong knowledge of synthetic biology, molecular biology, biochemistry
  • Understanding of bioreactor kinetics
  • Metabolic engineering of E. coli and S. cerevisiae
  • Experience working at different fermentation scales in lab (shake-flask to 100 L)
Responsibilities
  • Conceiving hypothesis, designing experimental plans and conducting experiments and analyzing and interpreting data
  • Reviewing scientific literature, executing research projects and reporting on their progress through oral and written reports and scientific journal articles
  • Communicating effectively orally and in writing
  • Presenting research at local, national and international meetings
  • Coordinating research projects and meetings
  • Interfacing with industry partners and vendors effectively
  • Calibrating and performing routine maintenance of specific equipment, and training other researchers and providing technical support for these equipment
  • Developing new techniques and methods and training other researchers in these techniques
  • Developing written protocols and training researchers on the latest on molecular biology techniques including gene assembly, primer design, plasmid constructs, CRISPR based genetic engineering, and directed evolution
  • Maintaining strain and plasmid databases as appropriate
  • Assisting the PI in preparing manuscripts and proposals
  • Assisting and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students
  • Performing other additional duties to enable the safe and efficient operation of the lab
