Experience and technical skills:

  • Research background in at least one of the following topics: simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), situational awareness, robotics, computer vision, machine learning, and/or related area
  • Proven record of publications in leading (1st quartile) conferences and journals in the field of robotics
  • Solid mathematical foundation paired with practical robotics experience
  • Strong programming skills in (at least one of) Python/C++
  • Familiarity with robotics frameworks like ROS; optimization-based frameworks such as GTSAM, G2O, or similar; computer vision frameworks like OpenCV; and/or deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow
  • Prior experience with industry or publicly funded research projects is highly desirable

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will join the Automation & Robotics Research Group (ARG), contributing to the situational awareness research line for robots and autonomous systems led by Dr. Jose Luis Sanchez-Lopez.

The position holder will perform the following tasks:

  • Conduct cutting-edge research in perception and situational understanding, advancing the state-of-the-art in SLAM, situational awareness, computer vision, machine learning, robotics, and related fields
  • Developing and implementing innovative solutions, validated through real datasets and experiments on our robotic platforms
  • Disseminating research findings through publications in leading peer-reviewed journals (e.g., IEEE RA-L, Elsevier RAS) and top conferences (e.g., ICRA, IROS), and engaging in outreach events
  • Take a leading role in research projects, prepare project deliverables and collaborate with stakeholders
  • Being involved in the preparation of research proposals to secure industry partnerships and attract national and European grant funding
  • Mentor and being involved in the supervision of PhD students on an everyday basis, offering guidance and support in their research, while co-authoring publications
