POSITION SUMMARY
The main responsibilities of the Research Associate (RA) will be to carry out, under the supervision of the PI, advanced respiratory physiology and neurophysiology experiments designed to explore in the central respiratory neural network the mechanisms by which breathing rhythms are generated, how they are impacted by sleep networks, hypoxia (low oxygen), hypercapnia (high CO2), drugs of abuse (e.g., cannabinoids, opioids), genetic mutations. The RA will also be responsible for data analysis and preparation of figures and manuscripts for publication. The work will be carried out with considerable independence. The main contribution will be the generation of new knowledge – specifically insight into the function and organization of the neural network that controls breathing and how that network responds to challenges with clinical sequelae.
QUALIFICATIONS
The Research Associate will hold a PhD in Physiology, Neuroscience or a related discipline. The position requires experience with advanced respiratory and neurophysiological methods for recording (via electrophysiology, imaging or whole-body plethysmography methods) and manipulating in rodents (via viral, optogenetic, chemogenetic approaches) the function of specific brain regions involved in breathing control. The position also requires experience with a host of labeling techniques including RNAScope, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy.
