JOB SUMMARY

The Research Engineer will play a key role in supporting in vivo imaging studies by managing data acquisition, image analysis, and the day-to-day operation and maintenance of small animal PET/MRI and PET/CT scanners. This core enables biomedical researchers to conduct cutting-edge, non-invasive imaging studies of animal models of human disease. The engineer will work closely with investigators to optimize imaging protocols, ensure high data quality, and maintain imaging equipment in excellent working order. This position requires a balance of hands-on technical skills, collaborative engagement with researchers, and routine system upkeep, with opportunities for involvement in protocol development, system testing, and imaging protocol optimization.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Bachelor’s Degree Engineering required or Bachelor’s Degree Related Field

EXPERIENCE

Experience in device engineering in a hospital, industry, or academic 2-3 years required and Experience in Medical Engineering 1-2 years preferred

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Strong interest in imaging technologies and hands-on experimental work.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot technical problems independently.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a research environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail, time management, and record keeping.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Familiarity with biomedical imaging, animal handling, or preclinical research workflows is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in imaging acquisition software (Bruker Paravision, Mediso, Siemens) and in image analysis tools and scripting (e.g., MATLAB, PMOD, ImageJ, AMIDE) preferred.
  • Experience with rodent handling including anesthesia, intravenous injections, and arterial or venous cannulation is desired.Experience with 3D printing, and basic machining or electronics is a plus.

Responsibilities
  • Operate small animal PET/MRI and PET/CT scanners to acquire preclinical imaging data in accordance with approved protocols.
  • Perform image reconstruction and post-processing using vendor and in-house tools.
  • Conduct image analysis and generate quantitative data for research studies.
  • Perform routine scanner QA/QC and troubleshoot system issues in coordination with vendor service engineers.
  • Collaborate with investigators to plan and implement imaging protocols suitable for specific animal models and experimental questions.
  • Maintain documentation of experimental procedures, scanner maintenance logs, and QA records.
  • Maintain inventory of consumables and coordinate purchases of parts, tools, and imaging agents.
  • Contribute to user training and onboarding of new investigators using the core’s services.
  • Participate in lab meetings and contribute to the preparation of figures and methods sections for publications.
  • Maintain scanner hardware, including coils, beds, and peripherals; perform minor repairs or modifications as needed.
  • Assist with development and testing of customized animal beds, RF coils, and hardware configurations.
