Job Description The Griffith Asia Institute is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow focusing on examining economic and policy research related to green minerals, metals, and mining finance and trade in Asia with a focus on China and Australia analysing the financial and policy dimensions of the region's transition opportunities and pathways for green metals collaboration and trade. The candidate will produce high-impact policy-relevant and academic outputs and support the organization and delivery of workshops and conferences. Key Responsibilities Research & Analysis: Conduct in-depth research on the financial flows, trade patterns, and technology policy frameworks related to green minerals, metals, and mining in Asia, including hydrogen. Data Expertise: Utilize and analyse diverse datasets from international trade and investment databases (e.g., ITC, UN Comtrade, Bloomberg, or similar) to identify trends in critical mineral supply chains, investment in mining projects, and associated financial instruments. Policy & Communication: Develop and write succinct, evidence-based policy notes and briefs that translate complex research findings into clear, actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders. The candidate will provide publish-ready thought leadership pieces. Collaboration: Work with the GAI leadership and other researchers to contribute to the institute's broader research agenda on sustainable development and the green transition in Asia. Conference and engagement: Organize workshops and support large events in Australia and the region with leading industry, government and other partners. Language Skills: Apply knowledge of Chinese and English language to access, interpret, and analyse primary source materials, including policy documents, company reports, and academic literature, e.g., from mainland China. This is a fixed term (12 months), full time position (a 0.8FTE appointment may be considered) primarily based at Brisbane South (Nathan). As Griffith is a multi-campus University you may be required to work across other campus locations. Griffith University’s campuses are located on the lands of the Yugarabul, Yuggera, Jagera, Turrbal, Yugambeh and Kombumerri peoples. Qualifications To be successful in this role, you will have: A PhD in in a relevant discipline, such as Economics, Finance, International Political Economy, Environmental Studies, and Finance, awarded no more than three years prior to the application closing date. (Candidates who have submitted their thesis but have not yet been conferred are encouraged to apply). Strong understanding of the global green minerals and metals industry, its financial landscape, and its specific dynamics within Asia. Demonstrated track record of research and publication, or clear evidence of research potential, in areas related to green finance, the mining sector, or international trade. Proficiency in policy, investment and economic data analysis using relevant software and databases. Proven ability to write policy notes and briefs for non-academic audiences. Fluency in Chinese language (reading and writing) preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Teamwork and entrepreneurial workmanship. The ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and collaborate as part of a research team.
