Description
The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Fellow on a 12-month contract at the Office for Research. Project Title: Reading Together: The Role of Book Clubs as Cultural and Community Resources Project Introduction: Recent PIAAC and PISA results reflect a significant decline in literacy in Singaporean adults aged 35 and above. While there are efforts to encourage adults to read and maintain their literacy proficiency, SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) also noted that literacy skills often decline after individuals leave school, as their use at work and daily life may be less demanding. Beyond formal education, book clubs (sometimes known as reading groups) can open spaces where members can develop intellectually and culturally through group discussions. As such, understanding the contribution of book clubs to adult literacy, and how these informal learning communities can extend and prevent the atrophy of our literacy skills, is crucial. Using ethnographic approaches, this research study seeks to understand how book clubs function as communities that contribute to literacy development, cultural capital, social cohesion, and lifelong learning within the Singapore context. Requirements: PhD in related area Experience in independently writing literature reviews, data collection and analysis A strong passion for reading Strong communication skills, including experience in peer-review publications and research communications Responsibilities: Coordinate research administration, including IRB applications Independently conduct literature review, data collection and analysis Assist with writing of research papers and presentations Managing research communications Supporting research team in all other research-related matters Other duties as assigned by Principal Investigator Application Applicants (external and internal) will apply via Workday.
