JOB SUMMARY

Under direct supervision from a higher level technician or a principal investigator, the Research Lab Technician II performs a variety of moderately complex and generally standardized physical, chemical, or biological tests with procedures and techniques previously outlined by established protocols and other scientific data. Provides direction and guidance to lab staff.
This laboratory primarily studies cancer-associated wasting with a focus on cell biology and immunology. You will largely perform basic laboratory techniques (primarily western blots, RT-PCR, histology, and flow-cytometry) as well as help maintain a murine animal colony. I am in looking for a technician who is organized and can perform experiments methodically. You will be taught most of the techniques, but the expectation is that you will pick it up quickly and be able to perform them on your own without supervision. We will meet regularly to go over the data and the laboratory’s needs.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Zoology, Exercise Science, or other related science, or high school diploma with four years of related clinical/ research experience.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiar with Basic Laboratory skills and techniques
  • Is able to listen and communicate effectively and have basic computer skills
  • Be familiar with medical equipment and instruments with the appropriate knowledge of common safety hazards and universal precautions to establish a safe work environment
Responsibilities
  • Conducts generally standardized chemical, physical, and biological tests on experimental/clinical materials.
  • Performs RNA and protein isolation on various tissues from human and mouse samples.
  • Sets up equipment and organizes materials used in performing scheduled tests, experiments, and/or operations.
  • Selects the appropriate experimental/clinical format from established standard formats and prepares simple charts, graphs, and reports from data obtained during research experiments and observations of research subjects.
  • Perform western blots, PCR, and qPCR/RT-PCR, and immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence.
  • Trains and demonstrates to graduate students, medical students, and other technical personnel, a variety of technical procedures.
  • Assists with or performs tissue collection (from mice) for laboratory analysis.
  • Assists with or leads animal husbandry for pre-clinical models of cancer.
  • Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
