The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy, and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.
We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.
Wellcome’s Discovery Research programme exists to support the generation of new knowledge that could transform life, health and wellbeing in ways we can’t always anticipate today. We fund researchers across fields, disciplines and career stages, in both the UK and Lower-Middle-Income countries. And we’re changing how research is done, through improved tools, technologies, methods and research culture.
The Discovery Research (DR) team works to manage and develop our portfolio of activities which includes individual researchers and teams supported through our funding schemes, as well as the world-leading institutes and initiatives we support through a more targeted approach. In 2023/24, we spent £910 million on research, across the breadth of our remit. Our funding supports thousands of researchers across the world and part of our role is to find ways to forge partnerships and networks with established and new research and funding communities.
We are now looking for a Research Lead to develop the portfolio with a particular focus on population health research. Wellcome has a long-standing track record and interest in supporting this field of research, notably with a focus on longitudinal population health studies (see
HERE
for example).
In this role you will:
- Oversee and develop the portfolio of longitudinal studies, cohorts and research resources that are managed through the Discovery Research Programme.
- Identify and devise approaches to capitalise on emerging opportunities within the field of population health research.
- Deliver high-impact activities in line with the wider aims of population health research at Wellcome.
- Ensure that both action and communication of Discovery Research’s activities in this space are coordinated across Wellcome and the research ecosystem to help ensure we are clear on the progress and barriers that need to be addressed and rely on evidence to guide our actions.
- Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Proven significant experience and knowledge of population health research.
- Experience of setting up and delivering high profile, strategic initiatives with multi-disciplinary teams at a variety of scales.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and negotiate partnerships with key individuals and organisations internationally in public or private sectors.
- Experience of managing projects and/or people across different areas of expertise.
- Well-developed inter-personal skills with an ability to challenge and influence senior stakeholders whilst building and maintaining relationships.
- Excellent delivery, logistical and problem-solving skills.
