The Research Manager – NCRIS Radiocarbon will lead a research project between the CHRONOS Radiocarbon Facility and the Centre for Accelerator Science, at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) as part of National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) funding. Based at the UNSW Chronos Radiocarbon Facility the role will work between UNSW and ANSTO and will liaise with the Radiocarbon Laboratory at the Australia National University.
Chronos is based around an Ionplus MICADAS (Mini Carbon Dating System) accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS). The facility was developed in collaboration with researchers at ANSTO and is in a state-of-the-art purpose-built laboratory at the Kensington Campus of UNSW, part of the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre. The facility includes equipment for chemical sample preparation, graphitisation for AMS dating, and stable isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS).
Radiocarbon facilities at ANSTO Centre for Accelerator Science (an NCRIS-funded, national user facility based at ANSTO Lucas Heights campus) include the NEC 1MV Vega accelerator and a suite of laboratories dedicated to the processing of samples and graphite target preparation, including an accredited Biosecurity Approved Arrangement (AA) for the import and processing of biosecurity materials.
The Research Manager will manage the collaborative NCRIS project between UNSW and ANSTO by coordinating an intercomparison and harmonising protocols and archiving radiocarbon data. This role reports to the CHRONOS Director and has no direct reports.
