Description

Job Title
Research Officer (Proteomics Lab)
Job Description
An excellent opportunity is available for a Research Officer to join the Proteomics Facility at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute.
About the Position
The WEHI Proteomics Laboratory is major technology platform embedded within Advanced Technology & Biology Division. The facility provides the latest mass spectrometric instrumentation allowing for researcher-led exploration, identification and quantification of proteins and peptides. Our team of experts utilise advanced proteomic technologies to facilitate the seamless translation of results to our collaborators, from experimental design and sample preparation to data analysis and statistics. We help researchers understand how proteins and their modified forms regulate biological processes and when altered or dysregulated, how they cause major human diseases such as cancer, neurodegeneration and immune disorders. Our core technology focuses on mass spectrometry and the WEHI Proteomics facility is equipped with an Orbitrap Eclipse, Orbitrap Q-Exactive, two timsTOF Pro’s, Maxis II QTOF, Impact II QTOF and MALDI MicroTOF.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-directed person to apply their expertise in mass spectrometry-based proteomics to the WEHI Proteomics facility. The Research Officer will work collaboratively with other lab staff, bioinformatics staff and research teams at the Institute working on a wide range of biomedical projects with a particular focus on signalling and structural proteomics and will be contributing to high impact research and translation. This position provides an exciting opportunity to be involved in world-class research projects, and for the successful applicant to build themselves a major international reputation.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Independently conceptualise, design, and conduct proteomic experiments (including experimental design, data collection, interpretation, and presentation)
  • Operating, troubleshooting and maintaining nano and regular flow HPLCs and mass spectrometers, particularly Bruker TOF MS, Thermo Orbitrap MS, LEAP CTC PAL, Dionex Ultimate and NeoVanquish LCs
  • Working under the supervision of the WEHI Proteomics Facility manager and other senior staff to develop and implement projects and experimental approaches in a timely manner to meet deadlines
  • Working collaboratively with staff (WEHI Post-docs, RAs, students) to design and execute proteomic experiments and discuss and implement technical approaches
  • Supporting the training of students, post docs and peers on data collection and analysis, instruments and lab safety
  • Keeping abreast of the latest technological advances in the field and implement new methods for facility users
  • Exquisite and timely record keeping and data entry into Electronic Lab Notebook and clear presentation of results

Selection Criteria

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • PhD in chemistry, biochemistry or related field (preferable with proteomics experience/background) or equivalent experience
  • Hands on problem solver that is proficient in scientific technology and has a strong theoretical understanding of protein biochemistry and practical knowledge of bottom-up proteomics
  • Extensive experience targeted and global proteomic profiling including quantitative LC-MS (both label/label free MS) including DIA, DDA, PRM
  • Knowledge and direct experience with state-of-the-art instrumentation for mass-spectrometry based proteomics including Thermo Orbitrap and Bruker timsTOF Pro mass spectrometers, nano-flow UPLC
  • Proficiency in using MaxQuant, DIA-NN, MSFragger, Spectronaut, Skyline and other software tools
  • Characterisation of PTMs/glycosylation, intact and subunit mass analysis, structural proteomics (crosslinking and hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry, HDX-MS) is highly desirable
  • Ability to troubleshoot experimental protocols, interpret data and design new experiments
  • A good knowledge in Python/R and ability to write and develop scripts as well as modify and implement open source or published code is desirable
  • Experience in managing research collaborations

Terms of Appointment
This position is available for 2 years in a full time capacity. Salary is Research Employee (RE) Level A4-A6 ($96,430 -$104,071). Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
